Poll on Backup software

Which imaging program do you use for backups?

I bet 80% of the surge arrestors sold today would be useless if there was a lightning strike close to your home. Most have a very low rating
Most of these actually even worsen this risk rather than help to reduce it.

Physically unplugging the power cable from the backup drive is not enough. The data cable (SATA/USB/Ethernet/etc.) also has to be physically unplugged because else a power surge could still fry the drive via it. Where there's Thunderbolt, there is lightning bolt. :D
I also shut down the router when not in use and turn off the surge protector switch. The TV / Internet cable has a galvanic high frequency transformer so high voltage spikes don't pass trough it
I unplug the power cable of the backup drive so it doesn't run and don't get contaminated by any virus or malware during normal use. My data drive is also cloned to my laptop so I have double data backup.
As I wrote, I always shut down the computer when not in use and turn off the surge protector switch.

Many other situations may happen, like my house being robed and my desktop and laptop being stolen. There is no 100% bullet prof.

My house got robbed once, and the house turned over all my computers to the robber, I now have it programmed to self destruct during a robbery. 🤣

I literally never shut off my router, switches, NAS, etc…in fact my entire network and most of my network connected devices are on UPSs and I have a automatic switch over whole house generator so literally nothing ever goes down. But yeah, a serious electrical spike, lightning or whatever, would probably take everything out…🤣. That’s why I use cloud backup for all critical data.

I shudder when I see that someone is still using Windows 7 system imaging in 10 or 11:eek1:
I have a friend who uses Winblows, I on the other hand have never had a successful reimage using Winblows. Macrium I have been using for years, have yet to have a failure ....... Macrium FTW

Even if the surge protector switches and the galvanic isolation transformer you use are good enough to stop a spike (which is still only a big if...), you won't be fully protected when all 3 devices at once are in use, even though this isn't necessarilty a problem, i.e. if you can be disciplined enough to never use all 3 at once. Similarly, when you carry the portable backup drive with you to move one copy offsite, you won't be fully protected until you arrive at the offsite location and you place the drive inside the protected environment that you have installed/rented there, even though this isn't necessarily a problem either, e.g. if you have to go there every day anyway in the first place, but that's still assuming you can find someone else (someone you can trust) to carry it in for you whenever you can't. Cloud backup (either public or private) is the modern standard for taking a copy offsite.

The whole point is not about being 100% bullet proof. It's about being able to make the proper distiction between a backup plan that fully satisfies your modern needs and a backup plan that you can pretend that it does... but doesn't. What can go wrong, does go wrong. It's about being able to anticipate things that can go wrong, and to make the necessary preparations, not make the kind of preparations that, at the full end of the story, have got one heck of a lot more to do with what they call wishful thinking.

I didn’t have a very good backup plan this morning. I was backing up this morning, and almost back into my old cow daisy, someone didn’t close the gate to the pasture, or either she opened it.

77,000 is the highline voltage, it's stepped down with transformers to 2-120v that = 240 to your homes meter can. In most commercial locations, 240v 3Ph or 460v 3 Ph."The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) lists the at maximum utility tolerance of +/-5 percent. = 228-252V" for homes.

So you want to confuse the issue by talking jargon nonsense.
I'm responding about this quote:
"As someone in the Electrical and A/C business, I have seen what 77,000 highline volts can do to a UPS and Surge protectors, so go ahead and count on one of those."
77,000 highline volts has never entered my house, and never will, let alone my surge protector.

I'm responding about this quote:
"As someone in the Electrical and A/C business, I have seen what 77,000 highline volts can do to a UPS and Surge protectors, so go ahead and count on one of those."
77,000 highline volts has never entered my house, and never will, let alone my surge protector.
Gosh big feller, you going to be ok? :D

This diatribe has degraded into udder nonsense, and the topic has been milked to death. Forget about backing it up, just kill the beast and enjoy some burgers.
