I have a specialty program that doesn't want to open maximized. (If you're curious, it displays the results of dynomometer tests of automotive shock absorbers - dampers to UK folks.) I usually start it from a shortcut in the Taskbar, but have also tried starting it from the list in the Start Menu and by double-clicking the exe itself. Same result from any method - it won't open maximized.

I've edited properties for the shortcut and set it to start maximized. Nope. I've also maximized it after it started, then closed it with both \File\Exit and with Ctrl-click the big "X". Also nope.

This is far from the biggest worry in my life, but it's like a dripping faucet, since I use it regularly. Is there anything else that I can try?

Sounds like it has the same characteristics as a Task Manager window!
As @kelper said, stretch the window manually to fill the screen, it won't be maximized in the proper sense but, it's as close as you're gonna get.

Some apps are hardcoded to not allow them to be maximized. One example I can think of is Core Temp. Absolutely no way to make it bigger. You can't drag the edges of its window nor does setting it to open maximized make a bit of difference.

I don't need to stretch it to maximize it. The "maximize" control is present at the top right of the window and it works as intended.

It wouldn't even bug me, except it always opens shifted slightly to the right of the screen and the "maximize" control isn't visible until you drag it to the left to be able to see the control and then maximize it.

"maximize" control isn't visible until you drag it
Then the solution for that is to change "run maximized' in properties to "run normal window". Then size the window by dragging its edges until it almost fills your screen. When the window is closed, Windows remembers your resize and it will open that way from then on. Personally, I don't run anything as maximized but size my app windows myself.

In this case you do! (sort of)
I suspect it's one of those app frames that only remembers a 'Restored Down' state, much like the Task Manager window.

I guess I'm just stuck with it. I changed the shortcut properties to "run normal window". Opened the program, slid it to the left, stretched it around to nearly fill the screen, and then closed it. Started it up again and it's just like it's been every time - a bit smaller than full screen and slid partially out of view on the right side. Here's what it looks like with nothing behind it but the desktop. Not obvious from the screen capture is that part of it is out of sight on the bottom, too. Oh well...

There's gotta be a solution!
Can anybody download that app?
If so, can you post a link?
I'm on my phone 200 miles from my PC but I'd try it at my next convenience, if possible.

Open regedit & find the program, it'll be in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software somewhere. When you find it see if there are entries for
appWin_h
appWin_w
appWin_x
appWin_y

They're the height, width & x,y position the window opens to. If they don't exist you can probably add the 32bit dwords but i wouldn't know where to add them without us being able to use the app ourselves.
