Remote desktop - is there an expiration?

I'd like to turn on Windows 11 remote desktop for rare instances when I'm away from home and need to access my desktop which runs 24/7.
Windows 10 remote desktop I think had a max 30 day limit on access, I think.
My idea is to turn on remote desktop on my Windows 11 box and use another port in my virtual server in my router to access.
Normally I'd leave this virtual port off in my router to disallow outside/internet access until I need it, and I can remote into my router and enable it, until no longer needed.
But, once I set it up/enable it, is it always on/available for a remote desktop connection, indefinitely?
(PS, I'm not talking about maximum connection time to a remote desktop)

There is no limit. However, your external IP address is usually dynamic and changes frequently. You would have to set up a dynamic DNS service (DDNS) (few are free).

In any case, connecting with RDP is not that secure and you should set up a vpn as well.

Frankly, it is easier and more secure to use a 3rd party tool like Teamviewer (with a strong password)

Thanks, I have a dynamic DNS service. Teamviewer won't work because I am not home at the time needed to initiate a teamviewer session and provide code to get in, unless there is a autonomous way. I'd only use this for a few minutes at at time anyway and would then close the router virtual server port from the internet when I'm done. I feel it'd be relatively safe to do that.

For TeamViewer, there are two ways to do it, you can use the ID and random Password (which works great having a friend, tech support, etc. connect) but there's also a setting where you configure a private permanent password that you use for yourself.

I completely agree with Cereberus. Teamviewer is the best there is....if you can afford it. I can't. I have found Anydesk to be an affordable alternative solution to remoting in to my computer when I am not at home. I use RDP only for accessing computers within my home network.

Why do you say RDP is not that secure? This website claims that RDP is more secure than Teamviewer.
It seems a bit odd to state that RDP is not that secure, but then recommend an even less secure solution.

This website claims RDP is more secure than VNC:

Personally, I have the VPN server in my router enabled with DDNS. So I first establish a VPN connection to my router, then I RDP into computers on the network using their local LAN IP addresses.

That Teamviewer article is a bit disengenuous as it says it is not secure with a weak password (which is why I said use strong one). With a strong password it is as secure as any other system that uses passwords. However, RDP without a VPN is still prone to attack as most people do not even change the port address for RDP.

There was a scare about Teamviewer quite a few years back and it was not the actual app that was the issue but people setting up online account with weak password. Of course, it is a good idea to use 2FA on your online account as well if using Teamviewer.

In the end, nothing is 100% secure but using RDP without taking additional precautions (like vpn) is asking for trouble.

Yes, but TV constantly flags the account as being used for commercial use even when it's not and then limits connection time to 5 min. It's a pain to constantly have to contact TV to get your account reset only to have to do it again a few days later. I couldn't convince the TV people I volunteered my services to the local senior center members and I made zero dollars out of it. I decided to absorb the $10 per month fee Anydesk charges rather than pay $50 month for TV.

$50.00 a month? Only if I was making money by using it.

I've used the free version of TeamViewer for many years now. I have been flagged for commercial use twice in that span, but contacting them and just saying it's non-commercial use is enough for them to lift those restrictions. Worse I had was like a day or two I couldn't use it because it happened right before a holiday weekend. I have never (and will never) spent a cent on using TeamViewer and will switch to something else if they ever demanded I paid.
