Restore information and wipe drive from Failed Laptop

The suggestion for using a Linux Live version is good. If you're unsure about using any *nix version then simply download the latest version of Hiren's Boot CD and create a bootable flash drive version and boot to that. You'll be using a Windows version of the OS to access any files on external drives.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
i second the Linux live USB option. that way you can retrieve your data and reset the SSD to blank by deleting all the partitions.
its has saved my data a few times in the past. you can use Rufus to burn the Ubuntu 22.04 ISO to USB.

Best of luck. Steve ..

I have looked at the LinuxLive USB Option but Ubuntu 22.04 is not in the Supported List. Also you mention RUFUS....Do you suggest LinuxLive or Rufus?

rufus is just a program to burn the iso to usb.

with that drive in, go into bios and launch boot options to go into safemode with networking. see if it will boot to that

At least for now, I recommend against trying to wipe the SSD with Linux. In the vast majority of cases, simply taking ownership of the Users folder factually does work, and besides, even if it turns out that it does not work, then in the vast majority of cases you still don't need to walk the extra mile of booting into Linux to be able to Sanitize or Secure Erase the SSD. That's just because modern SSDs these days almost always let you Sanitize or Secure Erase the SSD by using the tool software that can be downloaded by going on the official product support webpage for the specific SSD model in question, on the website of the manufacturer of the SSD. To be able to Sanitize or Secure Erase the SSD, in some cases you first need to perform a PSID Revert to unlock the SSD, if it turns out that somehow it was locked by the OS or by some other application.

So, to answer your above question, the need for Linux in situations like this has become rare enough that you should consider that only as your last resort, i.e., if nothing else helps, especially these days. We still don't even know what exact make and model is the SSD you have. Going by what you have told us so far, basically you almost haven't tried anything yet. Of course everyone is still free to decide what he/she wants to do with his/her SSD. Even so, I like to believe that first things should usually need to come first. It typically takes less than a minute or two to download and install the official tool software. It also is free because you already paid for it when you bought the SSD, and, why so many people never decide to first give it a shot is very far beyond me (and will be more than likely going to stay that way...).

So its an ADATA Legend 740 1tb. SSD....Disk Manager shows 5 Partitions and i just wont make them merge or go away...It owuld be ideal if i can revert it to on big chunk of unallocated space.

Check your Account Permissions:
Ensure that you are logged in with an account that has administrative privileges or sufficient permissions to access the folder.

Take Ownership of the Folder:
In the Security tab, click on Advanced.
Go to the Owner tab and click Change.
Enter your username and click Check Names.
Click OK and then Apply.
You should now have ownership of the folder.

Change Folder Permissions:
Right-click on the folder and select Properties.
Go to the Security tab.
Click on Edit and add your user account with the necessary permissions (read, write, etc.).
Apply the changes and try accessing the folder again.
Ive managed to copy the needed files using XCOPY, apparently it copies the file without the Permissions.

Do you know if after I take Ownership of the drive, will DiskPART work now?

@Patlos11

Ubuntu 22.04 is a Linux Live Distro
download the ISO

Rufus is to burn the Ubuntu iso to USB.

once booted into the live Ubuntu distro you can transfer files from that drive to another drive or USB.

then using Disks which is within the Ubuntu live distro you can then delete the partitions on that drive.

i hope that that explains it a bit better for you, best of luck. Steve ..

Will this method work ?

For a desktop computer, the BIOS must have:

Secure Erase+
Enables or disables the Secure Erase+ function. Secure Erase+ allows you to effectively erase all data on the SSD. Note that the data on the SSD will be erased when Secure Erase+ is enabled.

2.jpg

This will also make the drive run faster.

If the drive has hardware encryption then it is probably best to use a proprietary utility.

Click on Download SSD Toolbox.
Also click on Download User Manual right next to it.

Just as a quick precaution, I would use the Drive Dashboard and the S.M.A.R.T. button to get a quick glimpse of the health condition of the SSD.
As another precaution, I would also go to Diagnostic Scan, select Quick Diagnostic Scan, then click on the Start button below it if possible.

After it detected no problems with the SSD, go to Utility, click on Security Erase. This will erase every block in the NAND flash memory chips, and, not only it will make the SSD faster, but also it will extend the life of the SSD.

Also on the Utility screen, click on Firmware Update, then if it turns out that a newer firmware is available for the SSD, proceed with the update.
Having the latest firmware on a SSD is a lot more important than many think; it helps to improve performance, stability, and longevity of the SSD.

The various options in System Optimization should not be needed, as Windows 11 already has enabled TRIM, and also Windows 11 already optimizes SSDs once per week by default, as part of the Windows Automatic Maintenance (WAM).

When I have issues with a drive that I can put in a USB caddy or drive dock I will boot a Linux LiveUSB and use its file manager to recover possible files. Then if the drive is to be reused I use the included GPARTED program and wipe all the partitions to give it an as-shipped condition. After that the future use determines if I leave it that way or create one full partition and format to use as portable storage.
Which version of Ubuntu would you recomend with LiLi?

Many of the versions on that list have to do with different desktops/displays and some I've not run into yet. Any of them with Version number larger that 20 should work. I use Linux Mint 21.x on my Desktop and Notebook but others will work, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu. Many choices on the right panel here:

Many recent consumer motherboard bios have an option to secure erase ssd/nvme . Have a look in your leg iron bios and see if it is there.

It can also be done with parted magic, or alternatively make your own winpe with adata toolbox included.

Was bootable Windows RE diskpart clean all already attempted?

Code:
The clean command will only mark the data on the disk as deleted, and will not zero (secure erase) the disk like the clean all command below.

The clean all command performs the same action as the clean command above, but includes to specify that each and every sector

on the disk is zeroed (secure erase), which completely deletes all data contained on the disk.

This will make the data on the disk unrecoverable.

It will take about an hour per 320 GB to finish running the "clean all" command on a disk.

  • Linux and Windows executables are available at Executable Distributions
  • If you are looking for the PSID revert function see linux/PSIDRevert_LINUX.txt or win32/PSIDRevert_WINDOWS.txt
P.S., doing a PSID revert will not wipe the data from the SSD. It will only unlock the SSD from the 'frozen' state. So, next, it should be possible to run the clean command from DISKPART successfully. Do NOT run the clean all command. On SSDs, running the clean all command from DISKPART does NOT ensure that all blocks in the NAND flash memory chips of the SSD will effectively be freed, as the only way to ensure this is by running the Security Erase procedure from the ADATA SSD ToolBox.

Remember that, on SSDs, when the OS (Windows) removes some data, the pages that hold this data in the NAND flash memory chips will NOT be erased. Rather, they will only be marked as stale. Stale pages only get erased if the SSD decides that it needs to free up stale pages by erasing more blocks, as pages can only be erased by erasing an entire block. (In SSD NAND, blocks consist of multiple pages.) The OS has no control over the internal maintenance processes in any way whatsoever, and that also includes the garbage collection process. The only way that can be forced is by doing the Security Erase, i.e., to Sanitize/Secure Erase like I earlier said.

Like I also earlier said, the added benefit is not only that the SSD performance gets restored to how it was when the SSD was still new. It also helps to improve the longevity of the SSD (as this improved performance also means that the internal maintenance processes run more efficiently so it helps to further reduce write amplification and to further improve wear leveling), albeit you shouldn't repeat this Sanitize/Secure Erase action too frequently or else you'll gain the opposite effect that will shorten its lifespan.

By contrast, letting the OS remove the data with DISKPART clean all only results in writing more pages to the NAND for no good reason. The unnecessary writes that result from this action will shorten the lifespan of the SSD, and will do so for no good reason, because they are unnecessary. I.e., it doesn't erase the blocks. So, it also doesn't free any of the stale pages in them. It doesn't actually even ensure that sensitive data can no longer successfully be recovered from the SSD. Only the Sanitize/Secure Erase action can. As a result, running DISKPART clean all on a SSD factually is counter-productive.

So, what you need to do instead is just run DISKPART clean to comply with the "Please remove all of partitions before running Security Erase" notice. However, seeing as it does not let you do that, most likely your SSD is Security Locked, or 'frozen'. So, first, you need to find a way to 'defrost' it, as I am guessing that the SSD you have uses TCG Opal 2 for its Self-Encryption, and, for one reason or another, is currently Security Locked. :-)
