Did not realize you had a Git presence. Grabbed it and the WIM Tools .ZIP as well, and watched both projects as well.

I'll give it a shot in a bit, I'm actually performing a full format on the 32 GB drive I was trying to use with Rufus.

Also, I just used it to create a drive. works well, just as fast as Rufus usually is, and it's ready to go.

If anyone else uses the tool, when it comes to the Diskpart prompt to select a disk, you can verify the disk number you need to select from Disk Management console (Win + X --> Disk Management). I recommend, just as he does, that you pick Wipe for the disk.

Read post #12 for workaround- use ALT-, to unlock the drive and Rufus works everytime.

Thanks John. Yeah, brand new to GitHub so I'm not 100% sure I know what I'm doing yet, but learning as I go!

More specifically, if the USB drive has an MSR on it, it fails, as seen in the same link, further down:

Well, I tested on a different Windows 11 machine (this time not a Windows To Go one, but a system that went through a full install) and, as long as the USB I was trying to format didn't have an MSR, I saw no issue using the Windows Store version (apart from the notice about not being able to access VDS).
I did see [0x00000057] and [0x00000005] errors when trying to format a drive that had an MSR though, but those issues went away after zeroing a bit of the drive with Alt-Z.
So my current conclusion is that this looks mostly like Windows being an ass about preventing access to system partitions (which isn't exactly new), and not a systemic issue that everyone will face the minute they try to format a drive using Rufus on Windows 11.
I'll see if I can add new workarounds against this annoyance, but I think I'll wait until the formal release of Windows 11 to see how many folks are actually impacted...

Tried diskpart numerous times, undeniably for me the fact remained that rufus would not work on a dev build but flawlessly on a beta build. I didn't use the store version only direct downloads from rufus.ie

I was used to diskpart in creating bootable drives for years. Lately get interested in using rufus. But the last time in W11 it was with error just similar to OP have explained. Event deleting both volume, UEFI and source. When switched the setting other than GPT (say MBR) it works. But GPT is needed for W11.
I guess next time I will have to get back to diskpart again.

It gets a little weirder, format fails in dev build but is fine on beta builds. So flashed an iso in beta and then went back to dev. It worked fine when overwriting a previous successful flash so I wiped and formatted with diskpart and tried again in the dev build......again no go, format error. So summary:
1. Format error in Dev build after diskpart
2. Same stick flashed fine after going to beta
3. Back to Dev and it flashed fine overwriting what I had done in beta
4. Formatted the stick using diskpart in Dev
5. Tried to flash the same iso and format error.

I do not use Rufus for Windows 11, I just Download The ISO and use WinRar to extract it to a USB Drive. It works every time. Probably could use 7-Zip as well.
