hi irecently had a virus (trojan). windows defender took most of it,to where it is working ok. this is windows 11 and i cannot get safe mode with networking. it does not recognize F5. i wanted to run defender in safemode. thank you pothound

Have you tried using the ethernet cable? Many find Safe Mode with Networking doesn't work with wifi due to only limited drivers being loaded.

To get into safe mode, in search box type msconfig. I also suggest you install Malwarebytes which is better at handling malware than defender. It will install the pro version that runs in real time free for 14 days, after which MWB will automatically revert to the free version which is manual scan only.

i did not think of that. there is still remnants of this trojan in the computer. i thought about doing a reset, but not sure if it would be effective. i also tried diffent ways of getting safe mode with networking, not working. i wonder if this virus is causing this? thank you pothound

Yes, a reset with remove everything option would work for sure as it is the same as a reinstall. All remnants would be gone.
If you reset and keep your files there will still be a chance you did not clean everything as the infection could be attached to one/some of your files.
Do you not have a backup of your system that you can restore?

you can also hold shift during restart to put you in windows recovery environment from which you can select by number, i would suggest emisoft emergency kit, i also had some trojan that defender didnt detect and he tried to change my gmail and facebook pass.. thank god for 2 factor authentication

i'm thinking about doing a reset, removing everyting. being a little afraid, i have to build up some nerve to do this. i nned this to fix safe mode with networking also. if not i could buy a 25 ft ethernet cable and try it directly connected. thank you pothound

i did a clean re-install. I removed everything. I am going to buy a 25 ft ethernet cable to run safe mode with network. thanks to FrancoDT for the information. i was hoping it would work on wifi. i just did install windows. i have not noticed any trojan remnants yet. i have much work to do to get back to normal. thank you pothound
