If Explorer is closed, you aren't transferring any files and the drive is on Defender's exclusion list, there shouldn't be anything using it.
I am a big fan of Norton, I have been using it since the days of System works and wouldn't consider using anything else. I wasn't too keen on the crypto mining issue which would only affect one of my machines so I deleted the executable NCrypt.exe. All modern AV's are good but a lot of people on the forum do not like paid AV and Norton, that is fine everybody has there own opinion and preferences.
All my systems are protected with Norton. I know people say Defender and the free version of Malware is enough, but I like to pay to that feeling of being protected!
A lot just hog resources, the last paid one I had was Bitdefender, I swear that just sucked the soul out of the machine

There was a thread here, or it could have been on TF, that Defender had it's claws on a USB drive even though it was excluded. The fact is clicking on the remove icon is simple and effective and it makes sure the drive is safely removed.

@jvickers I had no problem on all 3 of mine but keep the file in the bin in case you need to restore it
I tried deleting it. It said I need administrator's rights, which I have. I removed Norton and am reinstalling it. I don't think that's going to let me not select the cryptomining option, though.
Thanks. That did it. I was on the new view and had to go back to classic view to access that. Once there, it was simple.
Defender has the same.
