Thoughts on Windows 11

The only thing that I don't like in 11 are the folder icons.

Again.. I'm weird and I like 11.. but then I had to get used to using various OS's during my working days. From various PC OS's to different mainframe OS's.. IE.. JCL etc. What I do is adapt.. to me.. complaining never helps.

If you just want a headless server for file serving, media streaming, backup storage, and possibly supplying centrally sourced software either for local client work stations to install or to supply a workplace "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure" as a "Local based cloud server" I would much rather manage this with fairly straight forward command line commands than mess about with all sorts of GUI's which add a huge complexity to any OS. I'm sure most people even on these Forums who use non Windows type NAS servers don't have full GUI's in them -- even when using proprietary OS'es like QNAP.

For workstations a GUI is IMO obviously required - but for Servers !!!!! - It's only bonkers idiots like me that have a go just for the fun of it to make things like the free 180 day trial version of Windows W2K22 server behave and look like a desktop !!! with themes games etc etc !!!

You have to understand that most computer users don't want to be a computer geek. They just want to use their computer. If it was the other way around, we wouldn't need the graphical interface we call Windows.

Bingo.. the vast majority of users love ICON's and point and click usage and not command line interface. As a programmer I use the command line from time to time to install features for say, Python. And I also use it to execute programs like Python or C++.

Command line interface is still popular among Linux users.

IMHO, everyone who wants to be able to customize Win 11 should use the Feedback Hub. Didn't MS make the statement that they weren't going to change the Start Menu in Win 8? It was changed in Win 8.1. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

That greatly depends on your own personal definition of the word "pretty". For example, I never liked the looks of animated tiles so I had disabled live tiles, but I can guarantee you that doing this didn't make anything run slower.

He's exactly right, there is a huge range of personal preferences. I for one am not that bent out of shape over the Taskbar, the GUI changes, settings moved around.

Yes, it's frustrating at times trying to find something that's been moved/removed or redesigned with missing info or settings, but it's still not frustrating enough for me to dump the OS.

As I’ve said many times, owning a PC is an active endeavor, not a passive one. Active here means learning how to use the new OS "you chose to install". It wasn't forced on you, and Windows 10 is still viable for another 4 years.

For me, overall I like Windows 11; It isn't perfect, but I'm not dumping it nor am I tweaking it to death to look like something else.

My two cents.

To the contrary, I think I understand 100% perfectly the fact his point is fairly moot simply because replacing the taskbar with a severely crippled one serves exactly no one excepting maybe only those who are malevolent enough to actually enjoy the fact that this frustrates a lot of ppl.

If your personal preference is to cause only frustration to those who wanted the features, then yes, that would certainly be right. Reminds me of the old "up" button in Windows Explorer (now called File Explorer) cry session and that also took a while. Squeaky wheel got greased? Yes, it did! Now, if they could've just greased it BEFORE all those tears finally caused motherboards to short circuit...

My point exactly, but when it comes to basic (!) features, there shouldn't be made any excuses like this. I switched from Windows 8.1 to 10 at the beginning of 2018, but had to fix several issues on another PC owned by a family member who had switched from Windows 8.1 to 10 soon after Windows 10 had been officially released. To me, personally, these issues were not at all dificult to fix or temporarily work around. But that's only because I have been using computers for more than 36 years, I have always been a little bit of a geek when it comes to computers (both hardware and software), and, I am a trained software developer also in addition to this. You can't simply expect everyone to be like me!

It's an improvement to me because it's over 10% faster in comparison to Windows 10, at least in some areas. So not a total disaster.

malevolent?? Really? MS is doing evil to users? Being someone who's used computers for that length of time(36 years) I thought you would have to had to adapt and adjust to new OS's and systems in the past like I have. I have 44 years of programming experience and I've had to adapt to new OS's and other things all of the time.

Is 11 perfect.. No.. I loved 2K more but hey.. that's in the past.

I don't have much of a problem in displaying things in a newer OS, still recall the use of Norton Navigator desktop on my MS-DOS 6 and Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups back before WIndow 95.

I had a graphical Interface that worked with MS Dos before I had Windows, was a bit clunky but you could set up icons for various program.
Win2K was a favourite, I have no problems adapting to different Operating systems, all MS systems apart from 8 and 8.1 many Linux Distros, BSD, free, BSD, OS/2, BeOs, OSX, Solaris and more. Win11 is relatively simple to adapt to, some things could be better but I can live with it / work round it if required, it could have been far worse!

(Taking tape off my mouth for a minute.) I have read post stating that the reason MS made all the changes in Windows 11 is because it is what large corporations wanted. I can see corporations pushing for a more secure OS. What I don't see is why they would want MS to change the OS so much that they are going to have to waste time and money to train their employees to use it. I don't see why they would worry about round corners vs square corners. I don't see them wanting new Emojis. I also believe that some of the UI changes such as the Start Menu and the Taskbar is to push their new Surface devices and not what large corporation asked for. (Tape back on.)
