Solved update KB5015814 wont install

@Cromax : thank you did that, and the same error code 0x80073701 came up, "the reference assembly could not be found".
Clicking on how to solve that.... hmmm ....don't really know what to do. Does it mean that I have to reinstall net framwork 3.5 ?
  1. Select the start button and type cmd
  2. Right click or long press on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. If you receive a User Access Control (UAC) dialog for Windows Command Processor stating, "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?", select Yes.
  4. Type or copy and paste the following command into the Command Prompt window:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
  5. Wait for the command to complete.
  6. Restart your device.
  7. Try checking for updates again.

Back in June MS released KB5014668 (optional preview cumulative update) which failed to install for many people. KB5015814 is the release version of that same update. Efforts of solving the issue made no difference-SFC, DISM, manually downloading and applying update, resetting update components, disabling AV...none of it worked, neither in June or now. It's not that there is a problem with either of these updates because they do not fail for everyone, but the problem is with the machines attempting to apply them. The system has to be fixed before any current or future cumulative update will apply.

If one waits for the August cumulative update, it will fail as well due to the very nature of what CUMULATIVE updates do and how they are designed. Each cumulative update includes the changes and fixes from all previous updates.

Save yourself a lot of time, energy and misery. Repair your windows installation.
EDIT- As has been mentioned-I did forget to add that I disabled Malwarebytes prior to repairing windows. After restart (with MWB still disabled) the update did apply. For some people, disabling MWB is all it takes to get this update to apply. But for others, windows has to be repaired first.)

Thats why only thing that helped me to install KB5014668 was this .net activations under windows features otherwise it would break on 98% on reboot.. It was solution for some other update on some other forum and i was desperate to not do clean install

to everybody : thanks for the suggestions and great help.
did the in-place update, had some problems with KB5015814 (again) this one kept downloading and installing, without result until it finally installed after I quit "malwarebytes", restarted the computer and have the version 22000.795, wow what a relief.

Honestly you dont need anything else than defender if you actually want to use something like malwarebytes as another layer get portable version

@Cromax : you are right, I bought 4 mbam licenses around 2010, I think, now they are lifetime ones, without it I would use the free version.
I have KIS on all computers (not to be trusted according to some) to me it's still a good combination although those two do not always agree with each other. I tested Defender, had good results but got back to KIS anyway, the green frame around the website for payments gives me maybe a false feeling of security.

I have edited post #22 to reflect this.
There has been no real rhyme or reason why this update has failed for some and not others.

I tried the in place upgrade. Failed twice similar to failing for ..5814 update.
I fell back to an older (May) Macrium image and then tried the in place upgrade but it failed the same way.

HOWEVER, I am now on the 22000.795 build and the ...5814 update shows as installed (today's date).

No data was lost with the rollback as I had backed up any new/changed word documents first.

@fireberd Good job getting it sorted out. Thanks for posting what worked for you. There;s been no commonality to what fixes this problem. It's crazy.
