Video details incomplete and non-editable

When I try to view and edit video file details in the details pane in "Properties" very few details show up. Length, frame rate, height or width don't show up. The same happens in the "Details" view in file explorer.

In previous versions of windows all these details showed up and were editable. I took a screenshot of a mp4 file but the same happens with other file formats, like mkv. Is there something wrong with my windows installation or is it a downgrade from previous windows versions?

Try recording something, for example using ffmpeg.

ffmpeg -i E:\"1.mp4" -c copy -metadata title="This is title" output.mp4

I tried using ffmpeg to do as you say, but I can't get to grips using ffmpeg. Is there a more user friendly solution to perform this test?

Yes, this is a downgrade from the W10 Explorer.

I've read the LesFerch's article and from what I gattered, I should be able to edit the metadata by right-clicking on the file, choosing Properties and selecting the details tab. I should have said "Details tab" instead of "Details pane". My bad. If you look at the screenshots I post on my original post, I've already tried that and, as you can see, metadata is still missing. This happens in all my video files, no exceptions.

That's correct. I just tried a test MP4 to be sure nothing's changed and I was able to edit the properties via right-click, properties, details.

Maybe there's something amiss with your MP4 files. Try this test MP4 file (link is good for 24 hours):

If you can't edit the properties of that test MP4, you can try a repair via Windows Update (it will keep your apps and data).

Another option is to install the Icaros shell extensions. That should restore the ability to edit the properties.

Make sure the video is not open in an app when you go to edit it.
If it is open, then you will not be able to edit the details.
Even if the video is closed if the app that you were viewing the video is still open, it also will not allow you to edit the details

OP’s mp4 is more than likely actually an mkv with the ext just changed to mp4. mkv details have never been editable directly through Explorer… that I can recall anyways.

I've tried both and none of these solutions worked.

That is not the case. I've tried with numerous files and also with @LesFerch test video.

That is also not the case. I've had this problem since I've installed Win 11 about two months ago. I'm on 23H2 because my printer doesn't work with 24H2.

IF you are attempting to edit a TRUE .mp4 and it is not another container renamed to .mp4 extension, then there is something messed up on your system. by Default windows will be able to edit the details of .mp4 files

mkv, as i stated, are not supported by default. there are third party addons that will allow it or software that will let you do so. run sfc scannow or dism image restorehealth commands. something is broken somewhere.

The Test-Video file provided by @LesFerch is a true mp4 file, as far as I can tell.

I ran run sfc scannow and dism image restorehealth commands. No errors were found. The problem persists.
