Windows 11
TL;DR My laptop webcam stopped working since I did Windows 11 clean install

I had the same issue on Windows 10 some time ago but was easy to fix by just changing device FriendlyName to "HD WebCam" from USB Boot
But on W11 even if I change the FriendlyName in
Code:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\VID_0BDA&PID_5841&MI_00\6&f59e281&0&0000
it still doesnt change the name of Camera in Settings or any other application
But it does change the name in Device Manager.

Specific error: MediaCaptureEventFailed , camera shown as 'USB Boot" Under Device Manager>Camera Instead of HD WebCam (as on Windows 10)

My Laptop: Acer Predator helios 300 2018 PH315-51
Camera Hardware ID:
USB\VID_0BDA&PID_5841&REV_0103&MI_00
USB\VID_0BDA&PID_5841&MI_00

I also check drivers on another laptop same model and it has webcam working with generic Microsoft drivers (Dated 2006)

Still I have tried all drivers from
- realtek
- thrird party tools ie DriverFix ,etc
- Related forum posts I could find
- Windows Update already checked
- Acer predator support page doesnt provide any WebCam drivers
- Also tried drivers from Acer aspire that just installed some realtek drivers, didnt work

I have tried:
- Uninstall drivers > reboot > Let Windows Install
- Use Custom drivers from above list > reboot
- EnableFrameServerMode in regedit
- BIOS reset
- Hold pinhole on back for Battery reset

Well, I found VID_0BDA is Realtek but I cannot find a PID_5841 anywhere. So, maybe the product has been removed from the USB ID database??! Or was that perhaps a typo error?

Also I checked my friends laptop same model Acer Predator PH315-51 (tho different variant , his one has GTX 1060 GPU) and I noticed his laptop has webcam drivers for PID_A060 which is possible but weird

Below is the pic from my friends laptop

I can find VID_0408&PID_A060. It is a 'Quanta Computer HD Camera'. It is a proper HD camera. I am wondering if your camera is HD? Windows 11 requires a HD monitor, but nothing out there to say you need a HD camera.

Is it possible for Windows to detect incorrect hardware id ?
or is there some way I can try quanta drivers ?
Also cant find any info from acer about what camera is included in my model
Cause I know for sure , me and my friend have the same laptop and I had A060 registry entries in my stock Win10

Windows just reads hardware ids as part of the device enumeration. I have not heard of this being "wrong" on a modern operating system. I think, in the days before Driver Signature Enforcement, then people used to force incompatible device drivers onto their computer, but that problem is more or less eliminated now.

To try the 'quanta drivers', you would need to use pnputil to load the driver into the driver store, and then see if the system picks it up for your device. But it is a bit like a "square peg in a round hole" if you are attempting different drivers from different manufacturers.

I also cannot find info about any camera - quanta or realtek - that is included in that model, so I do not know why your friends shows as different to yours.

I tried ubuntu live boot and it also shows camera as 5841 thus I dont think its a windows issue anymore

As I have tried everything , its probably a hardware problem.
Will either buy a external cam or send the laptop to service center. Will update back here if it turns out to be software issue.

Thanks for all your help

Then the cam is probably broken. I found many instances of this happening when I looked up the hardware in a Google search.

I solved the issue and my webcam is working now.
It was a hardware problem faulty connection, just had to unplug and replug the webcam cable.

Windows is detecting the webcam correctly now

Screenshot (393).png

Though I dont understand why windows would show incorrect hardware ID for a faulty connection.
Thanks to the sticker I could find my webcam is indeed A060 (same as my friends laptop , same model).

Coincidentally this hardware problem occurred when I switched to W11 thus my incorrect assumptions on it being a driver issue.
Really thankful to @iko22 for pointing out 5841 is not a HD webcam and all help , thnx

Hi folks

Glad you solved it - but for others with different driver problems :

Use an OS image where it worked (a macrium image can be mounted) --simply go from device manager ->properties->update driver -> scan computer for drivers and point to the OS where the webcam worked the file windows/system32/Driverstore . Ensure the search subfolders is checked as well.

W11 is still too new for W10 drivers not to work when they can't be found in a new install of W11. You won't normally get the problem on an Upgrade though.

Cheers
jimbo
