Who knows why a manual or setting states one thing in a BIOS yet performs as another? Regardless that the similar setting is set to legacy on my PC (As you said it’s probably like legacy first) I cannot boot to a recovery environment with a recovery USB unless I select the UEFI option or Windows wont allow me to boot to a USB.

Meaning in boot menu I get two choices to boot from a USB. They are the same USB
  • UEFI Recovery USB
  • Recovery USB
Unless I select the UEFI recovery USB option, I cannot boot to it because the PC recognises that my setup is UEFI and requires the UEFI boot option. And I believe (it’s been a while) that boot tells me I cannot boot to “Recovery USB” because the OS/PC environment is UEFI. And yes I have wondered why because as I said, Legacy is selected in my BIOS. Next restart I’ll check out my BIOS again. It’s been a long time since.

You may or may not see what I am trying to say, I know your brain works differently to mine, And like I said, I don’t screw with the default settings nor do I question them unless I cannot boot.

I’d say YES? The BIOS is set to legacy, Windows was installed with UEFI installation media settings.

BIOS says legacy (legacy first)
BIOS says “I see what they did here”
BIOS boots to UEFI

Well the fact that the internet is basically full of rubbish, I suppose it’s a fair statement?


Anyway, I can’t help but being simple. But I did take time to look right into this. Sorry if I was of no help.


If the motherboard's BIOS is set to legacy but the system still boots to UEFI, it means the operating system was installed in UEFI mode, and the system will prioritise booting from the UEFI drive regardless. So to me, that just says that the Legacy setting is redundant due to the first drive in boot sequences’ setup. Why? Probably as you said, legacy first.

And no matter where I look, it’s suggested that CSM is set to disabled. As I asked earlier on, I was wondering what you found if you did that.

its because CSM is enabled, as stated many posts ago. CSM enabled will override legacy only.

As far as I know, this just means (as you said @SIW2) “Legacy First” and if no legacy is detected, it resorts to UEFI. In no way do i think that having it set to legacy, does it disable UEFI boot options. As is proven by the fact you can boot.
