Wifi is ridiculously slow . . .

I'm running W11, Firefox, with Spectrum on an ASUS laptop.

- For quite a while now, but rarely, when I boot my laptop in the morning it will not connect to wifi automatically; I have to do it manually.

- The past week or so, when I am connected, it is crazy slow. I downloaded a file a couple of hours ago, it was only running at 80-100 kps. That would be good for dialup.

- I ran a speed test earlier tonight with "speedtest.net" and the DL speed was .67 mps. Other random times it's 1-5 mps or so, occasionally 10.

- Meanwhile, my iPhone always runs Wifi at 450-500 mps, although I'm not sure how that works. I have a weak cell signal so it's always set to use Wifi. But if I do a speed test, how do I know which system it's using?

- Last week, when my laptop was running slow, I disconnected it from Wifi, reconnected and the speed was good. But I can't repeat that.

- I've rebooted the router/wifi and that didn't help.

Does any of this make sense? Are these problems all inter-connected? TIA.

please try changing your WiFi settings to static addressing
IP address
gateway address
subnet mask

also set your DNS manually and try these DNS addresses
Primary 1.1.1.1
Alternative 1.0.0.1
they are cloudflare DNS

or Google is
Primary 8.8.8.8
Alternative 8.8.4.4

save the settings then try the WiFi connection please.

It is possible you have a defect WiFi module. I had this happen on one of my Asus laptops using Realtek WiFi module. Swapped the laptop twice on warranty, yet the issue persisted. Replaced the module with an Intel one (15€) and the problem was gone forever.

Did you try rebooting your modem to see if that makes a difference?
Is your Wi-Fi from Spectrum support Wi-Fi 5 802.11ac or Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax?
What does you laptop support? Newer laptops should support Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax but some may only support Wi-Fi 5 802.11ac.
Check which band you are using. Is it 2.4Ghz or 5 GHz. You get better connections with 2.4Ghz but better speeds with 5 GHz.

Comparing my 3 year old laptop with my 19 year old one using the Speedtest app in Windows and speedtest-cli in Linux.

ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (2022) laptop with Windows 11 Pro (Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax):
2.4GHz: 100 Mbps
5.0GHz: 846 Mbps

Toshiba Tecra M7 (2006) laptop with Linux Mint LMDE 6 (Wi-Fi 3/2 802.11g/a):
2.4GHz: 14 Mbps
5.0GHz: 16 Mbps

First you need to assess of it is a hardware or software issue. Diagnosing this really needs taking a logical set of steps until you home in on the solution.

First reboot router to eliminate that.

I would boot from a live linux drive and see if you get the same problem.

If so, that is almost certainly a hardware issue.

If not, it is a software issue.

Try a dual boot solution - if that works, you have a software issue with current installation.

If it doesn't work, it is some compatibility issue e.g. drivers.

Yes, it is a tiny board inside the computer with 2 small cables attached, that can be replaced using a small screwdriver.

I have done this twice and it was easy. Lots of YouTube videos for many different laptops.

Start with some simple checks.

Click on your Laptops network icon bottom right > Find the Wifi icon it should be blue > click on the chevron on the right
The Icon left of your Network name indicates wireless signal strength is it showing 3 or maybe 2 arcs ?
It should show 3 arcs when close to your Router/Wireless access point, normally the strongest in the Network list.

The next tests would involve LAN testing.

That may well not be correct as there are 2 possible M.2 interfaces/CPU/Chipset support for those Intel Wireless cards. My Wireless Card has the other interface represented by AX211/AX201 Cards.

Replacement Cards is jumping the gun for a less technical person.

It was just an example with images and prices of what I'm talking about. First the computer has to be opened and then the old card removed in order to verify the size and shape of it, if it comes to that.

I suggest connecting to the router by ethernet, even if you have to buy a USB-ethernet adapter. This will eliminate the wifi adapter as a cause.
