Quite honestly, in my opinion you should bypass rehashed software.

FYI

I loaded Thunderbird today. You may be plesently surprised.

As soon as you start it for the first time, it will ask you to add an email account.
You can let Thunderbird automatically detect settings or select the manual configuration.
It explains some things as you go.

Auto detect will communicate with the server (the domain at the end after @)
After you have done so, thats it.
There is really no need to change anything unless there is something specific you would like to see or have happen

Adding your second or 3rd email accounts is also easy.
To trigger the email setup, you can click on the hamburger icon at the top right of Thunderbird.
The hamburger icon is the 3 lines, one on top of the other. It’s known as a hamburger, you may of seen it in other apps.

Shout out if you need anything. Like I mentioned above, it’s a popular app and many members use it so a response should be easy and hopefully swift.

I have now removed Windows Mail and Outlook (New) from my PC and will continue to use Thunderbird as a quicker app along side of my loved Outlook from Office 2021..
I had to add 12 accounts, it took me a while. I have a few more to add.

Make a backup of your accounts and e-mail from your old system. Open Windows Live Mail and click on the button top left to see the menu. Select Export and export both your accounts and e-mails. Keep them on a USB flash drive. In Windows 11 download and install Windows Live Essentials 2012. Open Windows Live Mail, create your accounts again and click on the button and select Import. It is that simple. Hopefully you know your account details.

I just discovered the export profile used to reset Thunderbird with all settings and email accounts for another PC or if a reinstall is needed. Nice.

It’s a shame that PST files are proprietary to Microsoft therefore can’t be used as a PST file in Thunderbird. Imported as folders, yes, used as a PST, no.

But with the export/import feature in Thunderbird, I suppose it doesn’t matter.
Especially when Thunderbird also has a feature you can use to import accounts from Microsoft Outlook.

Add-ons are also available. I am yet to investigate.

If you want to migrate from Thunderbird to other email client it is very complicated to convert its data to the other client. Also I find Windows Live Mail working fine, except when you need to access Gmail and other online emails as it doesn't support two stage authentication. For online email accounts, just use your browser.

I used WLE for 16 years or so. Absolutely loved it to manage a gmail, 2 MS. and 2 ISP email addresses. While over the years it would give me fits every once in a while with corruption happening(not often), I could always uninstall, reinstall, and keep on trucking.
I used it in 11 until Jan of 1922 when more and more issues with it kept happening. What sealed the deal was when gmail went to modern authentification. (Now Microsoft has) I moved on and gave the old girl who had served me well a proper burial. I still mourn her passing.

I help a number of non-technical folks manage their computers and and have found the KISS method to always be the best choice. Here's my rule of thumb when I advise them.
1. Simple basic one or two ma and pa account user - webmail or whatever Windows app is on their computer at the time )Now is Outlook(new)

2. To manage number of email accounts where the user uses rules, moves email between accounts, and does more micro-managing in how his email appears within the application- Thunderbird is always my suggestion here. The folks over at Mozilla have it going on in everything they develop. While it's massive amount of settings could seem to overwhelm a newbie, it's default settings work for most people. With only a couple of setting changes it can be made to almost look and act like Live Mail.

I dug into all those additional settings once and my eyes-crossed. The good thing about TB, is how easy it is to find how to change something in it. without having to jump through hoops. The TB site help section is easy for anyone to understand and the Mozilla TB community is very active and has answers for everything. All it takes is a web search for "How do I xxxxx in Thunderbird" web search.

Email clients were necessary back when your ISP would provide your email or if you have a work/school account. Most of us have a free online email such as Yahoo (yes, I got that before Google existed, I am that old), Gmail and others. If you only have a free online email and don't need to use a work/school whatever email, then you hardly need an email client. Just use your browser. I remember there was no backup option in Outlook Express (Windows 98 and XP). You had to go and manually copy specific folders and files from your user folder. Then on reinstalling or on another computer, you had to open Outlook Express to create the relevant folders in your account folder and then create your email account again. Then close Outlook Express, copy-paste the folders and files from backup at exactly the same position. Upon loading Outlook Express again it would populate the inbox, sent and other data and you could keep using it like nothing changed. Thankfully Windows Mail in Vista could import Outlook Express data and the Windows Live Mail in Windows 7+ could open Windows Mail data/backup from Vista.

Wow! what type of PC did you have in 1922.

Seriously, everything you wrote is how I feel and do/did.

WLE/ Windows Live Mail rarely gave me issues and when it did I could soldier through with the help of others.

The choice you have now included in Windows 11/10 is "New Outlook".

The Mail & Calendar App is shortly to go, so that is not worth trying now.

"New Outlook" is not compatible with some accounts so there maybe some difficulties there. Also some features are missing.

Only 5 of my 6 Email accounts are currently compatible which is annoying.

I used to use Windows Live Mail 2012, but again only 4 out of 6 Accounts were compatible with IMAP. Unusable in 2024 so a non starter. Old Emails were simply moved to a folder in an Outlook account.

6 out 6 Email accounts on the Mail and Calendar App for around 8 years and proved to be the most reliable.

You have to try out some of the Email Clients out for yourself, that is what I did and it takes some months, but it certainly sorted things out and proved to be a reliable choice.

There are so many "bot style reviews" around obscuring things, but that is now par for the course.

Hang on, you told me that in 1922 you were one of the first to own the Abacus-7000

Even if Mail app is not available in the future, I guess if you already have it, it won't just disappear. It will not be available in the Windows Store for download. However some good folk, probably Winaero, will find a workaround.

Windows Live Mail works on my unsupported laptop but my MS/Hotmail account doesn’t as OAth 2 security is required, even the app specific password option no longer works.

I haven't been ignoring replies I'm just suffering info over load.

I have come to realize something when it comes to receiving/sending emails, I've had it easy, by that I mean I never thought about it, Windows Live Mail has been with me for so long, gotten so use to it, it does what it does and letting go, if I have to will be hard, you are never to old to learn but at my age, sometimes learning new tricks, new methods can be confusing and worrying, silly really, it's a PC that uses apps and programs but the tin box becomes part of you.

I think I have always maintained control, I don't want Cloud or any other app/programme that feels it has a right or can look at files and folders or possibly even depriving you of access to your info'.

I have been trying to help myself, not just relying on your good selves and researching up on my options for emails, To a great extent it's been a mistake, my head is full of info and a lot of it's clashing.

So I stopped researching, I downloaded and installed Thunderbird but my first stumbling block, I don't understand what the info window is telling me and is it safe to proceed to enable exemption, see image.

While I own my domain name I don't host anything with it just use it for my email requirements, I'm assuming I don't require a certificate or do I?

I'm concerned by giving TB the info it requires will it take over Live Mail, I still want to be able to use Live Mail for sending/receiving my emails, for now at least. I want to be able to review TB, see if I can set it up make it look and feel the way Live Mail does.

If I stick to Live Mail and install it separately after installing Win 11 any security it affords me will no longer be available as it will be no longer supported.

I use a free AV on my PC, Avast, ( like or hate it ), every so often it will flash a warning some suspect email/s has been received, flags it for me as spam or worse and then I delete, without opening, seems to work well.

I am wondering should I continue using LM after upgrading to Win 11, is there a--something--that will do the security work for me, monitoring my emails, warn me before opening, downloading any nasties in my emails including attachments, free or paid for.

I think what I'm asking if I use the unsupported version of LM will my free AV still do what it does or do I need to pay for real time security protection, not just for web sites I visit via Google but all my emails?

Thunderbird should of been abpe to detect the servers settings without interaction.

As far as I understand it, all that image is really saying is that you've chosen to override Autodetect (Thunderbirds better judgment), so it is basically asking you to wave any responsibility.

The only time you’d really need to manually configure a server is if it said it couldn’t connect, during sertup.

Just click permanently store and click confirm security exception. Or cancel and redo it using Auto Detect

Thanks, that all makes sense and TB did automatically detect server settings then it threw up the info window and I wasn't sure.

thunderbird will not take over from live mail but just run along side live mail.
which one you open will download emails and you can use either to read/write or reply.

OK set Thunderbirds up and with a bit of luck can make it look and feel the same way Windows Live Mail behaves, it looks ok.

I have set up my email accounts and can see them, worked out how to create new folders in each inbox, so far so good and TB retrieved all my messages from my inboxes in Live Mail without any action on my part.

Fly in the ointment, can't send myself messages to check everything is working, so if I try to send a test message from one email account to the other, I'm not receiving them, messages are being received by my Live Mail accounts where I can see and open them.

I thought I need to set TB as default email client, did that by going into settings and checking the box to set as default mail client, nothing doing, If I send test messages within TB to each account they are being received by LM.

I did receive this message, which strikes me as odd as TB detected all my email settings at install any ideas?
