Windows 11 Error with DISM RestoreHealth

Funny, we just do repair install, reboot, then RestoreHealth. ScanHealth and SFC come back clean after that, as does CBS.log. That's just actual experience with hundreds of devices though. Admittedly, I am not a large language model.

Claude apparently doesn't know its WinSxS from a hole in the ground.
I've done the repair from the system menu, but it didn't solve everything. ScanHealth still shows "The component store is repairable" and while RestoreHealth is successful, it doesn't really repair, ScanHealth still shows "The component store is repairable"... it's a loop.

I ran a startComponentcleanup then a ScanHealth that said the component store was repairable, and finally a RestoreHealth and it said everything was fine! All fixed, right? Not so fast! I ran the ScanHealth again and it was back to the component store was repairable. I ran the RestoreHealth again and it said it can't find the repair files anywhere.

I think Microsoft really screwed up the works here! 🤣

There have been multiple threads here on the issue...

Fails for some, works normally for others (which it does for us...with no hoop jumping...25H2 with August 2026 updates installed).

A couple of free tools from Sysnative to detect and fix corruption...

ComponentsScanner

SFCFix

Some may disagree, but if sfc is working, and you can do an In-Place Upgrade, I wouldn't worry too much about dism.

The irony is that a fix was pushed in the June 2026 updates for the same thing.

I did multiple repair installs using different media, on-line and ISO, the error still persists. SFC /SCANNOW doesn't report any errors, right after the repair install, so my thinking is some data that is not touched by a repair install is really causing the DISM failures.

Yep, just tried that again yesterday with build 26200.9445, did that, than a ScanHealth that said the component store was repairable, then the RestoreHealth that appeared to finish successfully. However, another ScanHealth said the component store was repairable and another RestoreHealth show the same "can't find the repair files anywhere" I've been seeing for the last few months.

I get similar now, I run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup then reboot which now clears the RestoreHealth error and RestoreHealth then completes successfully but Scanhealth will still show repairable anytime it's run.

I've stopped trying to fix this, obviously Microsoft has something hosed since a number of people here, and I see more if I do an Internet search on the issue. All these people can't have suddenly developed this oddball error at once without some help from Microsoft. 🤣

Same, going in circles downloading and installing ISO repairs that no longer correct the issue is not a workable solution.

@FrancoDT @gunrunnerjohn and others with this problem.
For a few months, do as I did. Before and after this error, I always used the following commands in PowerShell (administrator):

Powershell:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -CheckHealth

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

Do not use scanhealth again until this error is fixed or has disappeared.

You run the commands from my post 6 in a cmd as admin to make the error disappear: 0x800f0915, and only then the 2 powershell commands.

Today, with the Repair-WindowsImage -Online -CheckHealth command, the image was repairable, so I used the Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth command which repaired it. Then I used pseymour's PowerShell command:

Powershell:
Get-Content C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log | Select-String -Pattern 'Payload[\s]+Corrupt'

This showed me all corrupted files, 11 in total, and all were fixed.

For a few days, run the command Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth to see if it holds without the error.
After running the Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth command, run the pseymour command to see if anything has been fixed.

I'm thankful I have 3 identical pc's running the same hardware and software, this helps when one is hosed, just pull the good drive and clone it to the hosed drive. Should we have to do things like this, of course not, but as Forrest said "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get" no truer words spoken, especially when it comes to MS.

It seems that this is more of a Microsoft utility screwup than real file corruption.

I did multiple repair installs using different media, on-line and ISO, the error still persists. SFC /SCANNOW doesn't report any errors
If SFC works, and the system is running well (and repair installs are not failing), I personally wouldn't worrry about DISM.

As always, YMMV

My desktop passes without issue. My laptop fails everytime. I have attempted a repair by reinstall via Windows Update, repair by reinstall, and running Restorehealth and pointing towards install.wim (UUP iso that is same version of Windows as on the machine) as source.
