Hello! I have a HP envy laptop that randomly stopped working and was requiring the bitlocker code to try and do anything, which I had, but ended up in a constant cycle of trying to do anything with my laptop, it failing, and sending me back to reenter the code. I couldn't wipe and reset the laptop without it failing either. I have taken it to a repair shop, where they manage to wipe and reinstall windows onto it. I have been advised to ensure windows is completely up to date before doing anything else on it now, however whenever I try to download and install the 23H2 KB5067112 update, it fails with error 0x800705b9. I have tried windows update trouble shooting and other things but this doesn't change the install error! any help on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated as the laptop is only 14 months old and I or anyone I've spoke to have no idea why this is happening, thank you!

A repair install is a shortcut to fixing this issue (most of the time)

You could try it.
If your PC is Windows 11compatible, use Option One
If the PC is not compatible with Windows 11, use Option Two and create the install media with Rufus.

For Option Two, download the ISO using Media Creation Tool and tell it to create the ISO as apposed to creating the USB media.
Then use Rufus to create the install media and use option two the the in-place upgrade tutorial

Download Rufus

Create the install media:

Use option two in the in-place upgrade. Or simply open the install.exe as administrator on the Rufus USB via File Explorer. Remember to Keep everything when asked.

Yes seen lots of posts on various websites about it, but everything suggested to fix it hasn't worked for me unfortunately

To bypass this, you could use option two with an install media via Media Creation Tool (Let it create the USB)
Run install.exe as admin from the USB in File Explorer
Just make sure you keep everything when running the install

I have not tried this as I currently don't have access to a usb or dvd etc (which I believe I'd need, but correct me if I'm wrong as I am now pretty clueless to what I am doing)

All good.

  • Download the ISO using Media Creation Tool (Option One)
  • When Media Creation Tool asks if you want to create a usb or just get the ISO: Choose ISO
  • When it is finished downloading, right click on the ISO and select “Mount” at the top of the context menu
  • Go to the mounted ISO in File Explorer: Right click on Install.exe Run as Admin & follow the prompts

Side note:

I don’t know if this is the same for all users but when I use Media Creation Tool to download an ISO, it seems to always wants to save it in “Documents” just in case you can’t find it in your “Downloads” folder.

And…

The reason you use Media Creation Tool to download the ISO, is because MCT always offers the more up to date ISO than a direct download from Microsoft

  • Download the ISO using Media Creation Tool (Option One)
  • When Media Creation Tool asks if you want to create a usb or just get the ISO: Choose ISO
  • When it is finished downloading, right click on the ISO and select “Mount” at the top of the context menu
  • Go to the mounted ISO in File Explorer: Right click on Install.exe Run as Admin & follow the prompts

Thank you! I do this, and it goes to a blue screen installing windows 11 - it downloads for ages, gets to about 75% then I get a pop up from windows 11 setup saying windows 11 installation has failed - any idea why?

Two things to try:

  • Disable Fast Startup
  • Also,“Temporarily” disable secure boot in your BIOS. Turn it back on after update.

How to Disable Fast Startup in Windows 11
Fast Startup can cause issues with dual-boot setups, device drivers, or system updates.

  1. Open Control Panel
    Press Win + R, type control, and press Enter.​
  2. Navigate to Power Options
    Go to System and Security > Power Options.​
  3. Access Shutdown Settings
    Click Choose what the power buttons do from the left pane.​
  4. Unlock Grayed-Out Options
    Click Change settings that are currently unavailable (requires admin rights).​
  5. Disable Fast Startup
    Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) under Shutdown settings.​
  6. Save Changes
    Click Save changes and close the window.​
  7. Reboot

During reboot, enter the BIOS and disable Secure Boot

You could try the above and then try Windows Update as apposed to the In-Place upgrade, just to see if the update works in Windows Update.

What are the status of important files?



If there are no important files then clean install the desired edition / version

If there are important files then custom install the desired edition / version
