Solved Windows 7 .... what would you do with it ?

Hey gang, i just bought a HP desk top for $10 ......... it's so old it has W7 .. 6.1 (Build7601: Service Pack 1) on it ! So what would be your suggestion i do with it !
Update it or just throw it away ?
Note: After removing all the junk & running some clean up programs to make sure there were no bad things (virus & other junk) it runs fairly fast !
So should i update it or just leave it as is ? I thought about installing W11 on it !
Your thoughts please ??

you can install win11 on a separate partition.

$10 sounds like a bargain. What model is the machine?

You cannot install Windows 11 on it and get it activated - not yet, at least. You can however get it a digital licence for Windows 10, either by upgrading its current Windows 7, or by using this tutorial to do a clean install. Perhaps in a second partition? Or replace the HDD with a spare?

And as a digital licence for Windows 10 is the same as a digital licence for Windows 11, you could then install 11 on it and it will activate from your exiting digital licence.

I have an old Win7 Pavilion desktop I found in the recycle bin. I found a loose power cable but otherwise it was fine. I bought a SATA SSD and installed Win10 and Office on it. Put all user files on the HDD and it runs great. I was able to do a clean install using the product key on the case. It’s a solid machine for business stuff.

Yup, I would go the @Bree route 7 > 10 + digital license > 11. For $10 bucks you will doing your part for the environment by recycling/reusing perfectly good hardware that would have otherwise potentially ended up in a landfill.

you could run win10 gatherosstate.exe and use the genuineticket it creates to activate win11. I did exactly that.

No need to waste time installing win10.

I have just trawled through a wim backup of win7 I made and the gatherostate and genuineticket are on the desktop, so that must be what I used.

seems to be gatherosstate 1904.1 If I were to guess I would think I had used an earlier one, like maybe 10586 but apparently not.

Just remember, 7 may run like butter on that machine, but 10 or 11 is a different story.
But if you are just gonna use it mainly for browsing, linux could be the best OS for that machine (I am not a linux guy, just my 2 cents).

Keep Win 7, install a small SSD for Windows and programs and use the HDD for data only. It won't cost you no more than $US20.

If you want to do a clean Windows 11 installation, you can use the Windows 7 key to activate the respective Windows 11 version (Home or Pro). There is no need to get a digital license from Windows 10 first, just use the key to activate 11 directly. I have done it. If you want to go the upgrade route (assuming you are running Windows 7 64-bit), you must first upgrade to Windows 10 64-bit and then to Windows 11. You cannot upgrade directly to Windows 11, I have tried and failed. As for performance, if you update all drivers, including the graphics, it should be similar to Windows 7 64-bit. Of course an SSD will be much faster than a mechanical hard disk, so if you plan to add one, I wouldn't touch Windows 7, I would clean install Windows 11 on the SSD. If RAM is lower than 4GB, consider adding RAM.

If it has 4GB is fine, no need to go 8GB, unless you plan to do some gaming or video editing. Most Core 2 Duo (old Intel dual core) systems cannot go more than 4GB (2x 2GB DDR2 modules) anyway. SSD will make a greater difference in performance than going from 4GB to 8GB.

If you bypass compatibility check you can install Windows 11 with only 2GB RAM on a single-core (without Hyberthreading) system, but as you may suspect it will be very slow. I would do it only as an experiment, or if a stubborn customer wanted Windows 11 on a system that cannot be upgraded (I have done just that about a month ago). This is a good patience practice if you have kids! If you manage to use such a slow system for more than a week without giving it a punch, then you can manage your kids as well.

I do an easier way.

get a spare desktop PC with low hardware setup (4GB RAM, 80 GB disk, in my task). clean install Windows 11 (Pro or Home, you please), then full update. Image this OS to any PC needs Windows 11 OS, given the target PC already running Windows 10.

so far this way works fine. no need to activate after image. it's automatically done (Win 10's license). Lenovo, HP, ASUS, MSI, , , desktop or laptop.
Forget compatibility or TPM. Simply skipped when use this image.

my Lenovo IdeaPad 120S, 2GB RAM. 32GB eMMC was running slower on Windows 10. and no way to run Windows 10 updates (too small). did upgrade to Windows 11 in this way and runs better now with full update.

If take NOT 4GB RAM, take 8/16 GB, then the OS cannot be imaged to target PC with 2GB RAM/32 GB disk. OS too big. during my 1st try, I was running into this problem.
