YouTube issue with my ISP

Hi all,

My ISP provides a service called "YouTube Unlimited", in which they provide 30GB of data for a certain cost for HD streaming, and unlimited data for non-HD streaming. Since lately (I'm not sure if it's after I upgraded to windows -- around that time, anyways), this YouTube Unlimited package seems to be dysfunctional. No matter how much I stream in HD the data won't show depleted, and it looks like that data is spent using the normal background data (which is outside the YT Unlimited service). This is the YT-Unlimited package I've installed on my Laptop's modem/sim, but the same package installed on my Phone works fine -- so I cannot say it's a defect in the YT package. So I called the ISP and they are saying that in their systems they cannot detect any Youtube activity on my connection -- and that's why the YT data is not depleting. The customer service cannot seem to figure out why they are not registering my YT usage. So I'm non-plussed. Does anyone have a clue what's causing that kinda thing (me using Youtube and the ISP not registering that I am)? I'm not using VPNs or anything when I'm on YT. And I'm using both Firefox and Opera on YouTube (So it's not a browser problem either).
?
Hope my question makes sense.

Thanks!

Is it possible that your ISP has changed it so that the YT-Unlimited plan only affects mobile devices now? And that Customer Service simply has not figured it out?

More importantly, are you using the same provider for both your Home Internet as well as cell service, or are you referring to using your mobile deevice only while at home connected to your Home Internet ISP?

Thanks for the input.

Both connections are mobile, my laptop uses a dongle to directly connect to the net, not a fixed line or anything.
More importantly, are you using the same provider for both your Home Internet as well as cell service, or are you referring to using your mobile deevice only while at home connected to your Home Internet ISP?
Yes, both are from the same provider. But my cell and laptop use different connections (different SIMs) by the Same ISP.

I use Youtube/4K Download a lot to get my fav band songs as well as anything else I want. No fee, no fuss, gerrin!! I have just changed to Bitdefender who keep offering me VPN - but at a cost. No thanks. Their freebie VPN would not cover anything I use.

The Youtube service that the ISP provides does not support unlimited data for downloading YT vids via an outside S/W than within YT platform. I use 4K downloader too, but that's out of the question I have

Ok I just tested it by connecting my laptop to the net via Wifi from my cell data, and it still seems YT data is not consuming through the "Youtube-unlimited" service. I.e. The YT service on my cell does not seems to work when it's streamed through the lap. So could it be a problem with my laptops network configuration or windows11?

Only thing I can think of is that, for whatever reason, even through the same exact connection, the HD videos on your laptop are not being signaled by YT as 'mobile' (probably because of the screen size / some other algorithm) whereas the ones on your phone are, so your ISPs software to capture and regulate the amount of HD videos used is specifically looking for streams 'tagged' (for lack of a better word / description) as mobile to regulate, and are allowing streams 'tagged' as desktop (or, better yet, not tagged as mobile) to continue through unfettered. Someone more versed in streaming technologies and / or content distribution can probably better answer / explain what I mean, but the gist is that, when you use your laptop, your ISP / YouTube treat it differently than when you use your phone, and thus your ISP is not catching the content being sent to your laptop. Your test of using the shared connection from your phone supports this theory of mine, because it was still the laptop doing the download.

Another interesting fact is that the phone cannot view the content when connected to the laptop. This suggest that the dongle may have something to do with it as well (not solely, because if it was the only thing affecting this then when you connected the latptop to the cell phone then it would no longer be in play, and thus could not have cause d your result). Have you perused the contract related specifically to the dongle with your ISP? But I still think it is primarily the device type.

Wonder what happens if you connect another mobile device to your phone (by hotspot sharing via WiFi) and try?

Make sure you keep a record of the conversation you had with your ISP CS about the isue, in case they decide "Hey, we caught you getting XXX amount of HD video without paying for it so you owe us YYY money" - because in this day and age, just the fact that anyone is even offering something as ridiculous as an addon for HD content in the first place is pretty shady to me, so they may try something like this. That being said, though, is it a problem, per se? If they are not actually logging it, then that means, for all intents and purposes, you have free reign to watch anything you want on the laptop. And you've done your due diligence in notifying your ISP about the issue, so you should be good. But keeping a record of that entire conversation is just good sense going forward.

Thank you. That makes sense.
And yes, Unlimited streaming seems shady, and they offer those kinda other services too -- like Unlimited data for a few hours for a small amount of fee / data addons for social media usage / for work and education purposes etc. Anyways I was using these addons for sometime now and haven't had an issue with them up to now. But I've decided to remove the YT addon from my dongle since it's not working anymore, unless they'll promptly fix it.
