Black screen with mouse pointer

I bought an HP Laptop 15-Fd0060ne i7 laptop on June and I installed Windows 11 23H2 on it. It is using S0 sleep.

Everything was fine for 2 months and the laptop always woke up when I opened the laptop lid and I got the log in screen. One night the laptop was dropped on the sofa from maybe a height of 100cm. The next morning I opened the laptop lid and I didn't get the log in screen and I got a black screen with a mouse pointer and I can move the mouse pointer. If I close the laptop lid and I open it again then the laptop screen switches off and back on again and the again I got a black screen with a mouse pointer and I can move the mouse pointer. I had to force shut down the laptop and switch it back on.

The laptop was ok for a few weeks and then it was placed upside down on the table at night and then the next morning I opened the laptop lid and I got a black screen with a mouse pointer and I can move the mouse pointer. I had to force shut down the laptop and switch it back on.

I want to ask why am I getting a black screen with a mouse pointer? Is it because of a hardware problem or a software problem? I think it's because of a software problem because the laptop is not frozen when I opened the laptop lid and I am able to move the mouse pointer.

When I was using my previous HP laptop sometimes when I closed the laptop lid then the screen switched off but the laptop didn't properly go to sleep and the bottom of the laptop became quite hot and if I opened the laptop lid then the laptop was frozen. If I leave the laptop lid closed then the laptop battery will become empty and the laptop switches off. Those things happened because of a hardware problem. The battery is still full when I got a black screen with a mouse pointer and the bottom of the laptop is not hot.

I saw YouTube videos on how to fix a black screen with a mouse pointer. In the videos the black screen with a mouse pointer came after you signed in into the laptop and you can press ctrl + alt + delete and you will get some options and then you can run the task manager. I didn't get any options when I pressed ctrl + alt + delete.

Does the new HP laptop have a problem with waking up from sleep? Event ID 506 in the event viewer under System is for laptop entering modern sleep and Event ID 507 in the event viewer under System is for laptop exiting modern sleep. Each time I close the laptop lid so the laptop sleeps and I open it so the laptop wakes up I get Event ID 506 and Event ID 507 in the event viewer. I checked the event viewer after I got a black screen with a mouse pointer. There is Event ID 506 for when I closed the laptop lid on the previous night and there is no Event ID 507 when I opened the laptop lid and I got a black screen with a mouse pointer.

I noticed something weird. I am using a program called f.lux on the new HP laptop so the laptop screen becomes and also the mouse pointer becomes dim at night. If I close the laptop lid at night when the laptop screen is dim and I open the laptop lid the next morning then the laptop screen goes from dim to light. When I opened the laptop lid in the morning and I got a black screen with a mouse pointer I saw that the color of the mouse pointer was dimmed and it wasn't white. I am unsure if f.lux caused the problem. I uninstalled it just in case.

I am worried that dropping the new HP laptop on the sofa cushion messed up something in the laptop hardware because the black screen with mouse pointer problem started after the new HP laptop was dropped on the sofa cushion. Can the sofa cushion really spoil the laptop hardware? It's soft so it shouldn't do that. Also, the laptop can endure being dropped on the floor if it wasn't dropped from a high height. The floor is harder than a sofa cushion.

Dropping onto a soft sofa shouldn't have caused much problem, if like mine from Dec. it has only one moving part, the fan. But 100cm is a bit over 3 feet so that could cause issues inside the case, maybe loosened something up that may only be spotted by removing the bottom/back of the case. There is a cable from the display panel to the otherboard that could have been loosened.

If it's a cable issue then the laptop will freeze. The cable of my previous HP laptop became bad so my laptop froze a lot.

Anyway, I think it was dropped from 50cm but there was a sound when the laptop hit the sofa.

You would be the unluckiest person that day if it did.

Brand new? return it.

Also, the laptop can endure being dropped on the floor

You really should stop dropping your laptop.

I agree you should return it. If you attempt to mess with it yourself, you could well void your warranty

The problem with returning it to a store is most stores only offer 30 days store warranty so you've passed that time. From there, the HP one year manufacturer warranty kicks in. (I believe that's what it is) I would contact HP technical support. They will probably have you return it to HP for repair. You will probably have to send a copy of your purchase receipt (don't send original)if you did not register it with HP when you bought it.
You can start here. Hopefully you can eventually get to technical support either through chat or phone number. I won't promise it will be easy as the manufacturers tend to run a buyer around in circles.
