Hi

What in the BIOS makes a computer keep turning back on after being shut down?
It does it with and without any drive connected. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what in BIOS could control this

Hard to answer without knowing the make/model of your computer, especially your motherboard.
We can't look up your BIOS settings without knowing what motherboard you have.

And for laptops... there's only a 50/50 chance of being able to look up your BIOS settings.

This is why we ask folks to fill out their system specs.
When the question isn't just a Windows question... we need to know what hardware you have. :-)

All that aside... there's no BIOS setting I know of that will turn a computer ON, after it's been "shut down".
There are BIOS settings that will wake a computer from "sleep" though.

====================================================================

You may have a bad power switch.

====================================================================

This is a setting in MY BIOS....

Image1.png

It's usually set to [Power ON].
So IF you are not shutting the computer down... properly, the BIOS may see that as a power loss, and therefore turn the computer back on.

The proper way to shut down a computer is like this...

Image1.png

Or if there is no Windows drive... then (for a desktop), hold the power button down for four seconds.
Unplugging, or just turning off the power supply, will be interpreted as a "power loss".

=======================================================================

There's a free program called: SPECCY, that will tell us a little bit about your hardware...

You can post a screenshot of this page of SPECCY....

SPECCY - JUL 2023.png

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg (max. size = 2MB)
2. Left click in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your pic and click Insert.
4. After clicking Insert, I usually choose the Thumbnail (smaller) option, or the Full Image (larger) option.

If the "new" PrtSc key function is not to your liking... here is how to set it back to it's classic function...

Thanks for that. I’ll show you speccy.
It is an asus prime b360m-a
It’s definitely not a windows issue. You can simply just plug the computer in and it will start turning on and off on it’s own. You don’t have to press the oower button. And then the power button doesn’t even respond to you pressing it at times, to start or shut it down. It’s very bizarre. Always worked fine since 2018. I thought it was the psu, but am seemingly wrong because the computer has power.
You can get windkws booting, running a bit, then suddenly it will turn into a shut down screen and it’s off. Lately it’s staying off but the past three days it’s been looping on and off on it’s own.

This would show you exactly if you watch it IMG_9546.MOV

My Computer

That america megatrends screen used to show up before i got it booting into windows again. Was a second perfectly functioning drive. There’s speccy, just tell me if you want something else

My Computer

The shutdown problem happens with no drive attached as well. No damage was done to the power psu wire at all

My Computer

This did start a few days and runs after an air conditioner overworked a fuse and shut it off. The computer was running when it got shut off by the ac but was in a power bar surge protector. And the ac is in a plug of it’s own. Two days after that it ran fine, then pretty much seven days after that, this started

My Computer

its not impossible that i could have changed something in bios that lead to this so that’s why I’m wondering if something would cause it from a bios setting. But I didn’t have this issue right after that, that was about two weeks ago. The ac was one. and i tried to reset bios to default. Don’t really see an option to when in advanced bios, just the easy use bios

My Computer

I was just changing between uefi and legacy. Don’t think I changed anything with cmos

My Computer

If there’s any section of bios you’d want me to take a picture of, just tell me

My Computer

Before all this bs, the computer did turn itsef on when on hibernate or sleep for no reason at all, the odd time, over the last 3 years.
But it never shut itself off and kept rebooting like this

My Computer

@cash

The F7 key will switch the BIOS to the Advanced view.

Going off this pic... press F1 to enter the BIOS.
Once in the BIOS... hit F10 to save and exit.
See if that solves the problem.

Sometimes, during a power failure or an improper shutdown, the BIOS gets glitched.
Just entering the BIOS and hitting F10 to save and exit, usually fixes any BIOS glitch.

Image1.jpg

I don't know why it's talking about RAID and Optane.
Unless the computer was setup that way when you bought it?

=========================================================

If the problem still exists, try this.

Go into the BIOS, and on the "Exit" tab click on Load Optimized defaults... then hit F10 to save and exit.

TIP: On the "Tools" tab in the BIOS, you should be able to "Save" your current BIOS settings to a profile.
You should always do this "before" changing settings in the BIOS.
That way, if you mess something up, you can just reload the profile you made earlier.

Are you saying that if you select shutdown then the computer shuts down and restarts again by itself?

One time when I tried to shut down the computer it crashed and automatically restarted itself. The shutdown > restart cycle continued until I stopped it. If it was going to crash on shutdown I wanted it to not keep restarting and just stop after a crash. To do that I did the following:

@MisterEd

First post, 2nd sentence.

BUT... when the drive(s) are connected... that's the first thing I would check.
I "always" uncheck the auto restart box.
Whoever thought that up... should be shot. :D

@cash

That check box does NOT affect the BIOS in any way. It's just a Windows thing.

The initials CMOS are referring to the BIOS chip itself.
The initials BIOS refer to the programming IN the chip.
So they are pretty much the same thing for all intents and purposes.

Th computer wasn’t setup for RAID. I built it. Don’t know what lead it to this. But i did have to change something in the motherboard to legacy to be able to detect my drive. Now that I did default, the dribe is not displaying in BIOS and starting the pc just brings you to BIOS. I’m trying to find where I always chose legacy but am having an issue finding it right now.

I should just follow this to find it. But to help you, this is what was set back when choosing default l they’re both different E2C46C95-AD99-439D-913A-E312411E172E.jpeg221D786C-6FC7-49F8-8205-A53A44BF410A.jpeg

Ok... here's how things work.

A GPT disk needs a UEFI BIOS or it won't boot.
An MBR disk, needs a legacy BIOS or it won't boot.

Don't worry about anything else, until you get the disk to match the BIOS.
It won't boot no matter what you do, unless it matches.
GPT disk and UEFI Bios
MBR disk and Legacy BIOS.

If you remember how your Disk Management looked... a GPT disk will an EFI System partition.
An MBR disk won't have an EFI System partition.

We kind of need to know if your disk is GPT or MBR.
