Solved Cumulative Update Fail KB5058411

When secure boot was on PC locked up when applying updates. Turned off the process completed albeit after several re-boots. What this has to do with missing drivers is beyond me! 🫨

No rhyme or reason that I know of, there are simpler methods to attempt before spending a day (or days) analysing (in my opinion).
I now always reply to update error threads with; Disable Secure boot, turn off AntiVirus. More often than not, this offering is ignored, only to discover after multiple posts that the member should, or is directed to; Disable Secure boot, turn off AntiVirus. TaDa!

I’m not all certain as to why. I just know from paying attention in this forum, that the two things to try before jumping through hoops, when an update issue occurs are:
  1. Disable Antivirus
  2. Disabling Secure Boot.

Sorry that I don't know the intricate’s, it’s weird as obviously these updates are directly implemented by Microsoft.

I know that it relaxes security restrictions that might interfere with the update process. Specifically that Secure Boot verifies the authenticity of the bootloader, and if it's not properly signed, the system might refuse to boot after an update. Disabling it allows the system to boot without this check, potentially resolving update-related boot problems. <- That;’s as close as I have come to understanding. Why would an update have anything to do with the boot loader? It’s all too Monty Python for me.

Go figure?

Yeah... I assumed that it must be checking more than that, but I've never really read up on it.

EDIT: A quick review informs me that it checks more than just the bootloader itself. It's also checking the signatures on the very basic/initial components of the operating system. At least one of those belongs to MS.

These days I operate on a “I really need to know” basis. My poor old head doesn’t have the capacity anymore. Overloading generally results in a family intervention.

Finally completed after 3 failures and a really slow download, high traffic maybe. The update also reset my netplwiz setting.

What was the successful factor? Was it simply the successful download?

The update also reset my netplwiz setting.

Weird.

2-3 restarts for the download but just 1 for the install. Both were much longer than usual.
