Winrar has to be paid for, all that's free here is a 30 day trial. 7Zip works, and costs me nothing

I use WinRAR; been using it for 2002. As I recall, at the time I bought my license, it was the only software (that I could find) that could open RAR files. As others have said, I like the way it creates a new folder with the decompressed files.

I use 7-zip up until now.

I just uninstalled it to see if the Windows Explorer is enough for my needs since it can handle .rar and .7z now.

Uninstalling 7-zip is not completely clean - it leaves its associations - so you have to manually associate ,7z and ,rar to Explorer in settings -> apps-> default apps

I use WinRAR. . I never bought it though, cuz it's technically free. Just have to deal with the annoying popup after the 30 day trial

I have Winzip, Winrar and 7z. I use 7z now because it's free and works with RAR containers. I was using Winzip since Windows 95 up to just a few yaers ago. You dont need to install 7z to use it and Windows 11 can handle zip files on it's own

I own a Winrar license since "the birth of the dinosaurs", but haven't used the tool in a decade. Currently rocking 7zip only, because it achieve hugely better compression than zip and somewhat better than Winrar, it's cross platform and has features no other archiving software has.

Winrar batch processing is really really good, so that is one thing I miss, but it's a decent compromise. Simply have to script batches, instead of point and click.

Over the years I found winrar to have more vulnerabilities than 7 zip.

So I use 7 zip.

  • Security: 7-Zip and WinRAR (RAR5) are equal, with 7-Zip offering better filename encryption.
  • Usability: WinRAR has a more user-friendly interface.
  • Compatibility: Standard ZIP is best for sharing with others.
  • Data Recovery: WinRAR can recover damaged files; 7-Zip cannot.
  • Open Source: WinRAR is proprietary shareware, 7-Zip is open source.
  • Windows 11 natively supports RAR extraction since version 23H2 and 7-Zip without passwords since 22H2
(from Google AI)

I don't use any of them much any more other than unpacking files I download in those formats or adding comments to existing ZIP or RAR files (Read Me.txt)

I have 108 zip files going back to 1991 and at 71 years old I don't even remember what some of them are. I use to keep all my ZIP files in a Zip folder but now that folder is full of all my stored apps and utilities which, HOLY COW, the properties says now contains 3,159 files in 240 folders. Dang, that must includes the files inside all the zip containers.
