Hi folks
For those who like Dr Who the entire collection including the original Black and White series is available on BBC iPlayer -- a lot of the older series are much better with some of the rather tame "woke" later series.

Enjoy.

Cheers

Regrettably many of the early episodes are lost in the mists of time due to policy of recording over mag tapes.

The above will help you assess if various episodes are there or not on the Iplayer website.

Many of the missing episodes are "rebuilt" as animated episodes as the original sound tracks and/or scripts were still available.

All 1st and 2nd Doctor episodes were in B&W.

Interestingly all of the 3rd Doctor (the legendary John Pertwee) episodes are available. Some were missing but BBC managed to recover the all the 3rd Doctor missing episodes from various sources around the world but some of them were only in B&W.

From the 4th Doctor onwards, BBC learnt its lesson and archived them properly.

Regrettably some series/episodes are still lost in the ether. Enthusiasts are hoping some aliens will have picked up the TV signals and will be able to record them for us and return as a peace gesture.

I have some of the early one's including the "Unaired pilot" and most of the series from the very ist episode. If the BBC want them I can send it to them - I'm sure their tech's can clean it up a bit -- files are in .avi format but still playable in VLC.

Thanks though for the link -- makes interesting reading - I'm missing a few but seem to have more than most-- what's good at least with the BBC iPlayer set is that you can optionally get the subtitles and using the translate subtitles change those into any desired language - although compared with a lot of modern stuff the original audio is surprisingly good on the B&W episodes --makes you wonder what all those "Media studies" graduates are doing.

You would be a hero. Contact them please.

I would love to get copies of the AVIs as well after you sent then to BBC (but you would get the credit and fame).

I would even forgive you for calling me grumpy lol.

This could be a good starting point

You can email bbc - I would attach a few minutes of a lost episode to show you are serious.

I bet you would end up in BBC News. Andy Warhol's 15 minutes of fame is so true

Out of interest how did you record these episodes. I assume you recorded on magnetic tape with an early video recorder then digitised later?

I actually did it from 16 MM reels to computer --- detais in the pm. University engineering labs were streets ahead of equimpent joe public could even think of getting back then.

I'm on the Ms's one drive - not sure how to enable someone how to access a file but I'll post the unaired pilot on it (which you can then download and play just to get an idea of quality etc) and then sort out the rest. It's 374 Mb and runs for 25 mins. You probably can tell me what to do to make file(s) available via one-drive.

Running this on updated version of VLC on Windows 2022 LTSC server (it's the only "physical" Windows machine" I've got. I;ve hobbled it to run as a dektop OS -- using the free 180 day trial - can be "re-armed" almost indefinitely !!).

Multimedia runs better on a native machine than in a VM !! and I needed to show it runs in Windows (VLC on Linux is fine). !!

drwho2.png

note -- you can get what the BBC currently has from the old series -- use that get_iplayer app get_iplayer --pid=xxxxx --subtitles --pid-pid-recursive where I think the download will be in m4a format - perfectly playable in vlc. That means you'll need fewer of the older missing .avi's. The pid is p0ggwr8l whicj is the series-id -- this will create a download of the entire 1963-1996 set that the BBC has on its site (won't expire either) -- there's a load so make sure your download disk space is big enough.

All you need to do is upload them to onedrive, right click on file name, click share and post link.

You are going to be a legend in Dr Who Year 60.

Quality does not matter so long as you can make it out. Remember the moon landing quaility - still viewable.

The audio was stored separately and never got lost afaik.

You can use any mainstream cloud service e.g. onedrive, google drive, dropbox.

@z3r010 - if @jimbo45 enables some lost episodes to be recovered, good marketing for W11 forum!

I'm sure they would be very happy to get any of the lost episodes. The cartoon versions are just not the same. Even though they used the original scripts. I have all of the episodes from Christopher Eccleston to Jodie Whittaker, (series 1 to series 13) on DVD. I also have a couple of Tom Baker episodes. On one of my spare USB drives I have the Peter Cushing movies. IMHO, Tom Baker will always be the best Doctor.

I would love to have as many of the lost episodes as possible. Unless they are pubic domain I don't think they can be legally shared.

I was not aware Dr Who was porn LOL?

Strictly I am sure you are right about sharing these episodes legally I guess they are still copyright to BBC.

However sharing episodes that do not exist - we could probably apply some timey-wimey loophole here LOL.

@simrick - you might find this thread interesting.

PS seeing all those B&W episodes reminds me of the classic snooker commentary:

“For those of you watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green.” - Ted Lowe, BBC Commentator.

The original 1st Dalek show (Dead Planet) has been given a major make over in colour!

A 75 minute episode will be shown next week on BBC 4 on 23rd Nov.

The original series was 7x25 minutes but quite a lot of padding at beginning and end with recap/credits.

Even so, they must have cut some scenes I guess.

Of course, many of us will remember the (rather poor) version of Dead Planet - 1st Peter Cushing film, so do not be surprised if it all feels deja vu.

The Peter Cushing film rather toned down the Daleks as it was felt the iconic "negative" killing scenes were too frightening for a children (I guess cinemas do not have apocryphal sofas to hide behind) and they would not get a U classification.

Kind of silly really - they just say they found them at a car boot sale. No way is BBC going to prosecute lol.

This is one of the links about finding the two episode. MSN
I would love for all of the episodes to be found so the full series could be released on DVD.

Tonight is the showing on BBC4 of the very 1st dalek adventure Dead Planet with Willian Hartnell reimaged with colour.

With the rise of Skynet, I am sure many B&W classic films could be colourised e.g. the Hilll with Sean Connery.

Obviously stuff has been cut out (only 75 minutes compare with over 120 mins over 7 episodes) and some zealous fans are dissing this, but hey they can still watch the unabridgedB&W version.

1.png

It will be interesting to see how well it has been done.

Apparently Barbara's dress is pink which is rather silly as school teachers in the early 60s would have worn rather drab colours like brown or grey.

With the rise of Skynet, I am sure many B&W classic films could be colourised e.g. The Hill with Sean Connery.
