Windows 11 Pro 23H2 (22631.3296).
Hi,

At the moment have 1 drive, partitioned C: W11 and other named Data D: containing nothing.

Since now I have full backups of the OS, have a few questions:

1. Should I relocate Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Downloads folders, and make use of it?

2. Or merge it with C, and have only 1 drive on this slot?

Hoping to hear your expert views.

Thanks.

PS: Am thinking about ordering 2 X 1 TB PCI X 4 Micron drives, M.2 M2230 and M2280, till than.

You get differing opinions - it really comes down to how much data, and type.

I like to keep OS and progs on C and data on (say) D.

This keeps my image backups lean and mean. Of course data on D also needs separate backups,

I also keep the user folders on C but only use them for temporary data (clearing out regularly), using D for my permanent data.

The advantage of doing this is if I have to restore a backup, or reinstall windows, I do not lose data on D.

So actually I would say no to both your questions.

However, if you are on a pc with (say) a small SSD, then relocating folders is ok, but it makes image backups more complicated.

Personally, I'd simply remove the data partition and expand the OS partition. Once you have another physical drive then it would make sense to possibly migrate your whole user profile or at least all the documents folders to that drive.

All my computers (5 to be exact), all have only one partition on the main drive. I backup all my data to other physical disks or to the cloud. It is simple and robust, without any overcomplicated partition layouts.

One drawback is that all the data that accumulates over the years affects full OS partition backup size.

Thanks for the experienced reply, appreciate it.

Now question arises, is merging 2 partitions, practically possible, error free since I clean installed a few days back.

What W11 tools do the job, or some 3rd part?

I would leave my user folders where they are and merge the partitions. When you get the second drive then you can move your user folders. With having your OS on one partition and your data on a second partition you're still going to lose everything if the drive fails.

You can use Disk Management in Windows to do this.

Step 1: Delete D-drive
Step 2: Expand C-Drive to maximum fee space available.

No data will be lost as long as the D-drive is empty.

If your split drive is like mine [150GB and 780GB from the factory] it will have a small partition maybe hidden between the two, can make it more difficult to Expand C: into what would have been D:.

Now it also depends on your full disk layout...you may need to move around partitions if they are in between the Data and OS partitions.

I intend to leave mine alone unless I need to do a full/clean re-install. Only issue I have is in keeping 20% of the C: partition empty, give Windows some "elbow room" in doing its work. To that end I've installed a number of programs on the D: partition.

@Alexey2912, you seem to like making a lot of changes to your laptop. With some of your changes you had to do a clean install so you could start over. If I may suggest, I would get an inexpensive laptop to play around with and leave the main laptop alone. This way you can have all of the fun with experimenting with computers while not having to worry about losing any important programs and data.

I intend to leave mine alone unless I need to do a full/clean re-install. Only issue I have is in keeping 20% of the C: partition empty, give Windows some "elbow room" in doing its work. To that end I've installed a number of programs on the D: partition.

Intelligent thinking.

Thanks.

Thanks @Winuser . Can MiniTool merge C and D without any errors?
It's never let me down. If I'm right, this is on the laptop that you just did a clean install on? If it is, you shouldn't have any problem with a hidden partition between the C: and D: partitions.

True, correct the laptop on which I did a clean install a few days back.

Once I get the Micron drives, than would have 2 separate drives vs. 1 with partitions.
