S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] is just a glorified idle condition.

This thread is about S0 Modern standby. You are not cursed by it.
You'll get more appropriate & helpful responses by posting in a new thread of your own.
I suggest you include your PowerCfg -a results in your new thread.
I also suggest you reinstall your display driver before expending effort on diagnosis. It has long been a common cause of sleep problems. [And that's reinstall not check for updates]

Bree,

Your S0 computer enters S0 after 4 minutes. It kicks in when the display goes off.

You can monitor this in an Event viewer, Custom view.

My S0 computer is still on Windows 10 but I expect the Custom view definition to work as well on Windows 11.

I thought this summary might be useful:-

There are in effect four Power/Computer states for an S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] computer
- Computer on, Monitor on
- Computer on, Monitor off {The monitor turning off initiates S0 Modern standby, the progressively severe idle condition that suppresses, amongst other things, Task scheduler tasks}.
- Hibernate
- Off

There is no "Sleep" in the sense that we commonly use the term ["S3 Sleep"].
- This is despite MS leaving the word Sleep dotted around the place such as in the descriptions of the later phases of S0 Modern standby.

Post #24 above shows how transitions between the first three states can be monitored.
- The crossed out bit of #24 also shows how transitions between the first & last states [Off & On] can be monitored.

I believe it required the registry change in post 9 of that article. Having hibernation as an option was only part of it. May not work for everyone but if I had a laptop that was overheating because of modern sleep I'd try whatever I could find to stop it. Manufacturers should be shot for doing this to laptops.

I assume you mean the reference to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\CsEnabled in the Superuser article?
The OP has already run the procedure [given in an ElevenForumTutorial]. It's not actually CsEnabled that is altered nowadays but another Registry entry [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, entry PlatformAoAcOverride]. I think it changed at Ver 1903.
Only some computers respond well to the Registry change [the same was true for its pre-v1903 equivalent].

????Quick my hind foot. It should never happen in the first place. Everyone knows heat kills electronics and laptops are more susceptible to excess heat buildup than desktops, especially when they are enclosed in bags. The engineers who made the decision should know better. It's a disservice to the people that pay big bucks for their products.
The registry change in the article was slightly different than the one in Brink's tutorial. That's why I brought it to this poster's attention. I didn't know if it would make a difference for this poster or not, only that it seemed to help the other one. I think a lot depends on what mobo and bios one has.

FYI in the US, especially in the south, the term "someone should be slot" is slang for
when you think that someone's actions are extremely unreasonable: such as,
They should be shot for selling drinks at that price! It's not literal....and it's not terrible.

Ahh, I get it. I took it that with the world being so touchy in regard to weapons these days that you thought I meant literally and that you were standing up for the OEMs. (British and Texas wording can be verrrrry different. In Texas we would have said it like this: That's too quick to take 'em out. Shootin's too good for 'em!) Oh wait...my bad. Texans talk different from EVERYBODY.

Hi Bree, thanks for you suggestion on this, I came across it on Google. Im in the same boat, brand new top spec laptop with windows pro (which should allow more customizing than normal) and I can not disable modern standby. S3 is not supported. So I copied your suggestion, disable network connection on standby, and to add the "hibernate after" feature, set it to 20 mins.

But what if Modern Standby is doing modern standby work in the background, like scans or updates, will that override the 20 min time limit and prevent it from hibernating?

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

With network connectivity turned off it shouldn't be able to find and install any updates. I've been using my laptop like this for a year now and not seen any problems with it not hibernating on time.
