Hi,
I am on the Release Preview channel on a device with "unsupported hardware" and am currently running version 22000.1041. With the release of 22621.521 to the masses, I'd like to update as well. Actually I did not realise this device had stayed on the 21H2 Release Preview path rather than automatically moving to the 'latest' RP which would have been various versions of 22H2. I suppose this was prevented due to the hardware configuration.

Can I manually install a KB package to achieve this without having to resort to doing an in-place upgrade via the ISO? I presume the update won't be offered to me automatically due to the device being flagged as having unsupported hardware (no TPM, Skylake CPU), but perhaps as it is now released officially, it will?

Appreciate any help offered!

Doing the upgrade from the ISO is pretty robust. Why are you reluctant to do it that way?

(I've done it on an unsupported laptop.)

My unsupported upgrade keeps getting an error just after saying no to checking for updates. How did you do it please?

I don't recall having to do anything special.

The initial installation of 11 (22000) was done via setting the registry key. Subsequent updates by upgrade using an ISO.

I've been very impressed with the rollout and rollback processes of Windows Update to push these kind of larger updates throughout Windows 10 and 11, compared to the days of "using the disk" for previous version and Service Pack upgrades, and attempting to undo those changes if things didn't go well.

The in-place upgrade process feels more risky in comparison to a "simple KB install", especially with a registry workaround already in place. Though I'm happy to be informed that the behind the scenes process is exactly the same either way if that's the case.

Cherry-picked example from another post:

Yup - downloading the ISO file and doing an IN-Place update worked:

I have to re-do several software tweaks, but that's not a big deal. The interesting thing was that in the middle of the update's reboots I got the message of "no boot drive" available, so I had to boot Macrium's Rescue disk and do the "Fix boot problems" function. That let the reboots continue OK.
