Internal DVD RW optical drive has had the wrong driver installed since late September 2023.

Have done most fixes on web, none have worked including downloading multiple update computer driver programs to no avail. Windows 11 search for driver update
comes back with best driver already installed. Hardware is showing in my Bio's hardware section. Also the DVD RW driver problem migrates
with every window update.

Hello @Bette and welcome to ElevenForum.

You can probably just uninstall the optical drive in Device Manager, and then reboot.
Windows should then supply the correct driver, from it's stash of drivers.

If that should fail to work going to the ACER website and finding the correct driver for that particular model might work. Product Support - Predator G6-720 | Acer Canada. The ones in the link I provided are for Windows 10 but often drivers designated for Windows 10 will still work in Windows 11. After that if Windows wants to update the driver it may work. I recommend making a restore point beforehand when installing new drivers.

I can't remember ever seeing an optical drive that needed a driver. Other than a generic Windows driver.
Even for R/W optical drives.

ASUS has a number of optical drives that require drivers - blue ray especially.

I have no experience with Blueray.

But I do have an ASUS optical drive. It doesn't need special drivers.

Over the years, I've had numerous Lite-On, LG, ASUS optical drives... none needed special drivers.
Always in a desktop computer.

I haven't seen proprietary drivers for an optical drive in more than 20 years.

This is what Device Manager shows for mine:

The 6/21/2006 date is standard, and bogus. I don't recall the explanation as to why Microsoft drivers report that date, falsely.

This is an LG device, which can burn 100 GB BluRay disks.

Are you having problems with the drive, or do you (mistakenly) believe that the drivers aren't the right ones?

Window's 10 and Windows 11 keeps installing the same driver upon uninstalling and rebooting computer. (cdrom.sys) Also product support Acer Predator does not provide any driver for Atapi DVD RW optical drive, nor any other internal optical drive. I did buy an internal Blue Ray DVD drive however getting the front bezel off is an issue. No instructions in Predator G6-720 User Guide_v.pdf to remove front bezel. See: Replace Optical Drive in G6-720? Also when I slide off left side to open case there is no screw on left side of the expansion bay on my computer, to replace optical drive, quiet possible it's on the right side. Also purchase and external blue ray optical drive and works great, even old Lite-On DVD CD works good. Might try uninstalling from control panel, shut down Computer, open case and disconnect all cables to Atapi DVD drive. Then reboot pc with it disconnected.

I'm pretty sure it's the wrong driver. Unsure why it will not update. Driver installed now is for a CD drive, not a DVD RW drive. I'm missing something.

The device is a BluRay burner, with a 100GB capability.

You are wasting your efforts.

I don't recall ever, or at least in a long time, installing a driver for an optical drive. Even for an Asus external writer the standard Windows driver is installed and it works fine.

Yeah, I wondered about that after I posted and looked around and couldn't find one myself. Looks like Acer fumbled the ball on that one. Perhaps you could try giving them a call? As a last resort you might try one of those third party driver update services. Again, I would advice caution when attempting this option, making certain you make a viable restore point first, and selecting only the driver you're attempting to replace or repair. As an added precaution I'd recommend uninstalling the software once you're done with it. Definitely looks as though you have the wrong driver there so that would need to be removed first.

I had to delete my first post because after doing a better search I found that my Pioneer Blue-Ray drive is using the same driver as your drive. Seeing this I think your drive is using the correct driver.

You have the correct driver (cdrom.sys), no worries.

Device Manager > Select the DVD drive > Right click Properties > Driver Tab > Driver Details >

Is there anything other than cdrom.sys listed ?

The reason for asking is that later versions of Windows 10 and I guess Windows 11 do not like driver modifiers.

I also notice you are on beta version of Windows 11 on an unsupported system. So Microsoft is the main man for problems with that.

You have external USB Optical drives that work so you are not stuck.

I also use External ODDs, especially since some newer computers, both Notebooks and Desktops, don't include them. The drives are just plug-n-go, mine is a Hitachi-LG and didn't include any software, just 2 USB cables, USB-A and USB-C.

I defer to the fact that times have changed. Haven't checked my Blue-Ray drive on Win 11 yet, but it makes sense. Still appears to be proprietary on Win 7.
