I read through previous "Update KB5015814 won't install post", but thought I would start a new Post to simplify. Win 11 Pro 22000.778. My computer specs are up to date.
KB5014668 previously installed OK and DISM Start ComponentCleanup and RestoreHealth plus sfc /scannow all completed OK at that time.
7/13/22 - turned on computer and got notification that computer needed restart. KB5015814 had already started installing per Windows Update so I rebooted. Thought all was OK with update.
7/15/22 - again when I turned on computer had notification to restart to complete the update. Windows Update showed it was apparently reinstalling KB5015814. It failed to install 3 times with multiple reboots before going back to desktop without installing.

I then decided to do an in place repair install using a 22000.795 ISO downloaded from UUP dump, which has always worked for me in the past, but this also failed with "We couldn’t install Windows 11 0x8007000D – 0x40021, the installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP_RESPECIALIZE operation"
My last backup with Macrium is 8 days old, so I am starting a new backup with Macrium so I can recover updated files if I have to restore the backup. In Windows Features both .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.8 are selected on with each of there sub-categories also on.
In the other thread I mentioned I believe that one of the posters did a restore back to a previous backup and still had the problem, so I would like to try to fix this before restoring. Malwarebytes was Off and Bitdefender was turned off during both attempts to install.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @dagar7

Can you run the SetupDiag Tool please:

SetupDiag - Windows Deployment

The Tool creates a Logs.zip Package.

Upload the Package on OneDrive or Google Drive and then share the link here please.

Edit:
With which error code fails the KB5015814 Update? 0x8000ffff?

Update to my problem
Ran DISM Start ComponentCleanup and RestoreHealth cleanups and SFC (no integrity errors found)
Ran Error Check on C: files - no problems
Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter, which found errors and Resolved them
Turned off Windows Features for .Net Framework 3.5 and 3.8
Ran Windows Update to install KB5015 and it failed with message "Error Encountered"
Still need help
Just noticed post from Tekkie Boy and will do that
Ran Setup Diagnostics as Administrator and it apparently failed. It created two files in the folder including an empty SetupDia log. Command Prompt flashed briefly and then immediately gone. Checked on .Net Framework and both had been renabled fully, possibly by my attempt at an in place repair install, so missing .NET probably not cause of Setup Diagnostics failure. Still stuck

Open the following path in Windows Explorer:
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

and look for the setupact.log.

The folder “$Windows.~BT“ is hidden.

Copy and paste the setupact.log to your desktop, zip it and then share it.

This is weird, as I couldn't install KB5015818 (22621.232) on Tuesday, had the same problem and error during reboot. I managed to do an in-place repair using the 22621.232 ISO.

Just noted your request for error messages. Only one I know of was in first post for the in place repair upgrade attempt. I looked in Event Viewer
Applications and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdateClient\Operational folder and found lots of events but no errors. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

Hi-
You may find this tutorial helpful: Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
I had a similar problem with a recent update and this tutorial fixed my problem in Win 11. Thanks, Brink, for the fix. Good Luck.

@dagar7

The upgrade fails because it cannot find one of the modules for the in-place upgrade.

Temporarily uninstall:

Bitdefender Antivirus, Path: C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender Security\wsccommunicator.exe, Timestamp: Fri, 15 Jul 2022 13:08:16 GMT

Malwarebytes, Path: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMWsc.exe, Timestamp: Fri, 15 Jul 2022 14:02:31 GMT, State: 393216

Aftwards use the Malwarebytes Support Tool:

And then use the Bitdefender Removal Tool too:

When done try the KB5015814 again. When it fails, let it me know.

Thanks for your new post. I will have to try uninstalling Malwarebytes and Bitdefender tomorrow. As I mentioned in earlier post, in all attempts, I quit Malwarebytes from the tray ICON and turned off Bitdefender Shield before starting the Update or in place repair install, which has always been sufficient in the past.
In the mean time, I did find the Windows update error information in Update history, for the Windows Update 3 attempts: 0x8007007e

Antivirus programs have filter drivers that can cause problems even if the programs are deactivated.

Please do the following:

Open the Windows Explorer and then go to:

There's plenty of documented methods to fix STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING .. given a package quoted in the logging associated with the Failed to pin... but my two instances don't reference a KB.. it's seriously borked ~~

I've never needed to uninstall AV agents in 20 years of using Microsoft Windows to run updates.. but i'm running MB too..uninstalled and reran.. no difference. Still same error.

Antivirus programs have filter drivers that can cause problems even if the programs are deactivated.

Please do the following:

Open the Windows Explorer and then go to:

C:\Windows\logs

Copy and paste the CBS folder to your desktop, zip it and then upload it on OneDrive.

I will try uninstalling my Malwarebytes and Bitdefender this afternoon. Do you recommend trying to install this CU or again trying the inplace repair upgrade?

@dagar7

There are a lot of Access Denied errors when accessing the registry during the update.

Here is just a small excerpt from the CBS.log:

Code:

This could definitely be caused by Malwarebytes and/or Bitdefender.

I already had this in another case, where Malwarebytes was the culprit.

But this excerpt confuses me:

Code:
2022-07-15 13:15:12, Info CSI 0000012a Loading installer DLL from stack-relative path: C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22000.795_none_047def894cac2b60\appxreg.dll

The appxreg.dll file does not normally exist in this path.

The file should normally be located in this path:
C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-s..-installers-onecore_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22000.795_none_e6dafed42ac81b40

Can you please check this path to see if appxreg.dll is there:
C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-s..-installers-onecore_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22000.795_none_e6dafed42ac81b40

If possible, create a screenshot when you have opened the path so that you can see which files are in the folder.

I will check on the appxreg.dll file later but right now I am doing a full backup of the computer after getting it to 22000.795.
What I did was uninstall Malwarebytes, turn off Bitdefender Shield, disconnect my network cable. I was going to turn off the two .net items in Windows Features but the 3.5 wouldn't respond and the 4.8 was not present. I then ran the installation from the 22000.795 ISO from UUP Dump (same one that failed to install my original attempt) and it completed the installation OK. I then made cloned Backup to external USB HDD.
After completing the first backup, opening Settings notification "Windows Update Attention Needed".
With fingers crossed, I went Windows Update and it wanted to install KB5015814 and selected Update. It immediately stopped, and indicated that it was up to date, so that part worked OK. I then did two Dot Net Updates and KB4025037 which completed OK.
After the backup image completes, I will check to see if Program Features looks normal or not. The only other obvious problem I can see is that the Taskbar Widget just show two small vertical blocks, one white and one green and it will not function, “Widgets is unavailable. You need Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime to use Widgets.”.
Thanks for your help

I did a search for appxreg.dll in WinSxS folder and found 4, two were in X86 folders and two in the amd64_mirosoft--------folder. Apparently different than before update to 22000.795. Pasting below.

@dagar7

I can't thank you enough for this, I was losing it after trying EVERYTHING to reset windows update, delete windows update downloads, unplug some of my USB, to no avail. Then tried this "in place upgrade" like dagar7 as well, and got the same SECOND REBOOT error.

I was getting ready to just reinstall the whole thing when I finally found this post.

THANK YOU!
