Yeah, even over here... You basically have two big providers. Comcast/XFinity who is the cable tv provider and AT&T who is the telephone company. Comcast/XFinity allows people to buy their own modems and use their own routers.. The router obviously the customer could do whatever they want but the modem is at the mercy of the Comcast/XFinity or whoever the provider is as the provider provides the firmware and what level of access you get to the cable modem that you own. Same thing with mobile phones if you think about it since many of us own the mobile phones but the carriers dictate and limits access which is why our bootloaders are locked. So with AT&T, with DSL - you can get your own modem but with the newer stuff, you have to lease the modem which comes with the WiFi router in one unit that AT&T controls as it's their firmware and they control what features you can change, enable and disable. All of them fortunately have a bridge mode setting but with Comcast if yo used bridge modem on their modem/router combo unit, there is one feature you cannot turn off. That is sharing your connection as a public wifi hotspot by other Comcast customers so while it does not count against your bandwidth cap, it does slow down your connection. then for the lucky ones, there is the independent providers like sonic.net who was originally a ISP that buys services from the big guerillas before they became their own telephone company to provide 1Gbps/1Gbps or 10Gbps/10Gbps using their own fiber optics, at the beginning, you had to use their equipment but I think later they allowed people to use their own router but regardless, their router's firmware was full user access. In my case, I am about 1000 feet from sonic.net's service availability so my choices are either AT&T at 50Mbps/10MBps or Comcast at 1.2Gbps/35Mbps, obviously I chose the later as it's the fastest thing available but I am paying $90 per month. the sonic.net people are paying $39.99 for 1Gbps/1Gbps of service.Yeah I know mate that’s when I got my first PCDial up modem. I scored them when debt collecting. BYO modems have been the thing here in Oz for decades, firmware edited by original firmware creators (from what I understand) can be used in modems when savvey enough. That forum I mentioned is full of info about that. But as you said, things like cable is slightly different. But cable is (was) available here without need for TV viewing. You can get internet from telephone providers without using their telephone services. Cable was actually quite fast back in the day, 1 megabyte a second which was huge lol

The real AT&T as in Ma Bell no longer exists. The current AT&T was originally Southwestern Bell Communications better known as SBC which was one of the 13 Regional Bell Operating Companies when AT&T was split by the government in 1984 and then AT&T only did long distanceCorp telecommunications. SBC bought AT&T after buying a few of the other RBOCs and then bought AT&T and kept the name. The real AT&T has been gone for atleast the last 23+ years.

Haha, I like to know about eveyrthing so I could tell you about banks and such. I'm a Astrophysicist Ph.D. working for NASA but I also own and run a ISP so my knowledge could be about anything as curiosity kills because of the interest I have in thngs, sports is not one of them. but my list of interests grows daily so I can also be talking about luxury goods and know the brands in detail like their product lines as well.
