Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

PA WOODCHUCK, wondering what went wrong cause i installed it on another 10 yr. old computer today ! Did you try it more than once ?

On one of my installs - on another old pc - I can't remember but I think it was the same error code, I tried the install again and it went through ok.

At present time I can't even get to the startup screen before win loads. Since monitor is blank and shows no signal I can't even get into BIOS. I'll get the wifes old PC when her new one gets here in about 2 weeks. Until then I'll see what happens and update as needed.

Just found this - has anyone tried it yet? Includes an undomented TPM for Vmware Workstation PLAYER. Just edit the vmx and add a single line.

So, in a nutshell, what's the preferred method for installing or upgrading to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware?

Stigg, i tried 4 different ones & the best & simplest was the one that Mackie posted above, i used it on 5 different computers & it was easy !

Edit: I watched the video, and deleting appraiserres.dll from the sources folder is very simple.
He mentions that it's for an upgrade only, but I would suspect that it should work for a clean install also. Or not?

Stigg, don't see why not,i know it was the easiest that i tried !! And it let's you install updates also !! Worked best for me, mine were all upgrades on systems that the 'Health Check" said not supported !

The method I prefer is the one that, in my experience, ALWAYS works -- and that is the hybrid method using the Win10 installer files and the Win11 windows files, combined, to do the install. I've done this multiple times, on a variety of incompatible devices, and never had it fail me yet.

The method I prefer is replacing the appraiserres.dll to a Windows 10 one, to make the install run because of the Windows 10 easy to follow Minimum system requirements.

But it appears that you don't have to replace appraiserres.dll. Just delete it.

I prefer clean installation than upgrading.

I know i used the W11 64 bit ISO to download, that is possible just to delete the appraiserres.dll. ........ pretty sure that was what i did on the first computer i updated ! Looks like it could go that way !! I wanted to keep all my files & folders from the Malware help i had done over the years on two of my computers. The other ones i didn't care either way jbcarreon123.

I don't know. I will replace it instead of deleting it just in case. My PC Recently been fixed so I didn't install Win11 on my PC.

In the video posted above, at 1:21, the guy mentions that using a Windows 10 appraiserres.dll instead of simply deleting it sometimes causes issues with some Windows components.

This might have already been mentioned, but here is another variation.
You copy the Windows 11 install.wim (install.esd) to a Windows 10 ISO. I am not sure if that causes any issues.

To summarize the hacks:

For clean installation on unsupported PCs:

Method 1: You boot from the Windows 11 ISO (on DVD or USB) and before proceeding you press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt. Then you run Regedit to open Registry Editor and modify the appropriate keys (see older posts in this thread). In some older post there are instructions to create a simple batch file (script) to apply these modifications automatically, without manually running Registry Editor. After patching the keys, type exit to close the command prompt and proceed with the setup.

Method 2: Create a hybrid USB drive with the Windows 10 64-bit ISO and replace the file \sources\install.wim (or .esd) with the respective file from Windows 11 ISO. Booting with this hybrid USB Flash drive lets you install Windows 11 on any computer without any check, provided it can also run Windows 8/10 64-bit (a known exception are the first generation of AMD Athlon 64 CPUs that lack the required instructions). I prefer this method, it is far easier, you create the USB Flash drive once and use it in all cases.

For upgrade from 10 to 11 or from one build of 11 into a newer build on unsupported computers:

Mount the Windows 11 ISO, run Setup but before proceeding delete the file C;\Windows.~BT\sources\appraiserres.dll from setup cache. I also click on the "Change how..." message and make sure NO updates are done during setup to avoid any conflict and BSOD. Yes, this method works only for upgrade, since on an new installation the check is done before the stage of choosing the disk partition, so you cannot delete the file before a clean installation.

PS: I have recently confirmed that you can also upgrade from Windows 8.1 directly to 11 with the same method, but I would prefer the upgrade from 10 for better compatibility.

TIP: In clean installation of Windows 11, there is a security setting enabled by default that halves the performance of the computer. Upgrades from 10 to 11 are not affected since this feature is disabled by default in 10. Search for Core Isolation and make sure the Memory Integrity is set to OFF. Also AMD Ryzen are known to suffer performance issues which are fixed if you install all latest Windows 11 updates and latest AMD drivers.

though the core isolation & memory integrity options are not available or not supported by very old CPUs (I did not see this option anywhere when I installed Win11 on a very old 2007 dell inspiron laptop using intel core 2 duo mobile t7600 cpu)


so no performance problems on that old Dell laptop when I clean installed Win11
