Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


There is no use trying to convince you. FYI the low performance you have seen could be due to suboptimal driver installation. As explained before, Windows Update installs only the minimum to make devices work. Installing the full drivers from manufacturer might increase performance and expose all device features. Been there done that.

To other posters: Don't be discouraged, just install proper drivers starting from the chipset and judge performance for yourself. I insist that in most old computers there is a big difference in performance between relying on Windows Update to automatically install drivers and manually downloading and installing ALL official drivers from manufacturer, even if there is already a driver for each device. I promise you it's worth the effort, don't be lazy. Been there done that more than 20 times. Like I said WE decide what is obsolete, not Microsoft or anyone else.

Exactly right. My 11 year old ASUS i7 Gen 3 laptop runs everything faster on Windows 11 than anything before, and it started with Windows Vista. It is a UX51VZA souped up with 32GB RAM for gaming and is still faster than newer laptops. I have updated through 7, 10 and 11 using the appreaserres.dll file fake. I have updated everything else, including nVidia drivers from the manufacturers, not the old BS Microsoft installs, and it makes a difference.

I told you! I know it will take a little if your valuable time to install proper drivers, but it's totally worth it. Also the manufacturer may provide older graphics drivers. It doesn't harm to download latest graphics drivers directly from nVidia/Intel/AMD. Yesterday I installed latest drivers for my nVidia GTX 1050 Ti (2nd system specs) directly from nVidia. Since I am not a gamer but I do render videos, I selected the Studio version to boost performance. For very old computers, such as my dual core laptop (1st system specs) you can also disable visual effects (transparency, fades, animations) to improve performance. You will be amazed.

Sorry for not reading back a few pages - but was there something about having to install the latest updates manually? As I'm doing a lot of waiting for backups at the moment, I decided to reinstall Windows 11 on the 10" atom Eee pc with 2gb ram. I used my original rufus stick from a couple of years ago. All updates done and resource hogs turned off and it's running very nicely! I'm sure it's slightly quicker than it was last time. Used the Vista 64 bit graphics driver. So it says I'm up to date with all windows updates - but was there something about no more updates unless you install manually?

I'm on 22000.2538

An unsupported device will get all cumulative updates, same as any supported device. The one thing it won't get offered will be a Feature Update to the next version of W11. For that you need to do a manual in-place upgrade using the known workarounds. Here's my least appropriate machine running 23H2.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

@Bree do you mind linking the update workaround for the sake of visibility, here at the end of the thread? If different than just the TPM bypass, like AveYo's?

The only Feature Update that doesn't require a workaround is the update from 22H2 to 23H2. For that you just need to install a small Enablement Package.

For an in-place upgrade, disconnect from the internet before starting. Mount the ISO and run the Setup.exe you'll find there. On the first screen click 'Change how Setup downloads updates' and select 'Not right now'.

Next replace C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll with an empty dummy file, make one by making a new text document on your desktop and renaming it as appraiserres.dll. You can now continue the install and it will skip the compatibility checks.

I believe the TPM fix I posted above by AveYo, handles appraiserres.dll and some other undocumented workarounds with hwreqchk.dll for canary builds..

For an in-place upgrade, disconnect from the internet before starting. Mount the ISO and run the Setup.exe you'll find there. On the first screen click 'Change how Setup downloads updates' and select 'Not right now'.

Next replace C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll with an empty dummy file, make one by making a new text document on your desktop and renaming it as appraiserres.dll. You can now continue the install and it will skip the compatibility checks.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Microsoft provides a WDDM 1.0 (Vista version) graphics driver for old Intel onboard graphics, such as 945G I guess your Acer Aspire One has, or the Intel Mobile 4 family (aka GMA 4500) I have on my test laptop (1st system specs). This allows you to set the native resolution of the display and provides hardware acceleration. However there are third-party drivers for Windows 10 64-bit (that also work in Windows 11) that provide the full functionality of the Windows 7 drivers and access to Intel Graphics Properties. The official Intel drivers for Windows 7 are locked by Intel to prevent installing on Windows 8 or higher. These third-party drivers are a hacked version of the Windows 7 drivers to remove this restriction and install on Windows 8, 10 and 11.

Regarding Windows 11 23H2, if you already run Windows 11 22H2 you can install all updates to reach build 22621.1506 or higher, then you can install the 23H2 Enablement Package as mentioned to upgrade to 23H2 without doing the full upgrade. This method doesn't check compatibility and needs no tricks on unsupported computers.

My AOD270 reports in Device Manager that it's a PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0BE1&SUBSYS_061F1025&REV_09

That device identifies as the Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 Series for Acer - AOD270.
I have tried every driver I that I can find, of the few that worked they all BSOD at shutdown 😢

If you let it connect to the internet during the upgrade that may be the case. I never connect until the upgrade has completed.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround.
    Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.
    In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media.
    Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package.

    Also running Insider Dev, and Canary builds and Windows 10 as native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
