Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Otherwise we will have to manually hack the Registry at first Setup screen before proceeding. Not very convenient.

PS: I preferred the hacked Windows 11 USB over the hybrid Windows 10/11 USB so it can also be used for upgrade from Windows 10, not only for a clean installation.

I found Rufus 3.19 different too and 3.19 beta (tried both) - will check out the suggestion above, but have now used my W11 usb made with 3.16 beta (so will have loads of updates to do). Tried making a usb of the new iso with 3.16 and it kept failing. So either something is different in the Iso or it's a corrupt download.

Can't see it. Downloaded 3.19.exe from this page. This is the Rufus Window. The drop down selection isn't there. There is just Standard Windows Installation or Windows Go To. In the drop down box under "Image Option". Nothing else to select (checked the advanced options for drive properties and format options too).

That latest download still shows up as 3.19.1911 even if you try updating it. So maybe it's not ready yet. The download says its 2022.07.01 but it isn't - it's 3.19.1911

If you are looking for the Windows 11 bypass options in the latest 3.19 version or Rufus, they don't appear until you select 'READY'

Found it thanks - it's when you press start. Still fails fairly early on - it sticks at D: sources boot.wim. Assume the ISO is no good/corrupt download?

It did fool me for a while, but as the extra options are for Windows 11 only I presume there was a need to avoid more clutter on the 'primary screen' A prompt would have been useful though.

By the way there is no 'they' the developer is a single individual who maintains the app as a self-financed project/hobby.

For those who've used the earlier one, they'd be looking for the options - although some could have missed the drop down box on the main page and burned the wrong version. So I guess by having the options after hitting start, it makes people stop and think which version they are choosing. It would be helpful though, to have a note on the main page, saying "other options can be selected after pressing start"!

Mentioned on another thread I've just fixed the 7 year old HP Spectre X360 - after a few glitches. It had Windows 11 on it before hard drive failed, and was a bit of a test machine for a while (not my laptop but wasn't being used).

I reinstalled Windows 11 and it all seemed very nice. Except the screen didn't seem as bright as it should have done and the battery maximum charge only went up to 80%. Checked all the screen settings but nothing made any difference. Windows had installed all the drivers.

So I've put 10 back on it and the screen brightness is fine and the battery charges up to 100% as it should. Suggests a driver issue with the Windows 11 install maybe? I don't remember it having this issue before - but there've been a lot of updates since it was last used in about November.

To fix the screen brightness you must manually download the latest Intel graphics driver, don't rely on Windows Update. For the battery go at manufacturer's site and download the Power utility for Windows 10 or earlier.

Thanks. I might try that. Having just installed Windows 10 again! The thing is, this machine had Windows 11 on it before and didn't have those issues then and I didn't install any extra drivers (although I may not have noticed the 80% battery thing). The screen was very noticeable.

Are you using a sata ssd on the 7yr old hp spectre x360 ?

It's an nvme m.2 ssd. It had one in before and replaced it with a Samsung one. So I guess that's a change. I did read a strange thing somewhere that HP keeps some firmware on the hard drive rather than in the bios but that can't be the issue because it works fine with Windows 10 on the new ssd.

Also read that HP have a setting that can restrict the battery to 80% as a power saving thing - that can be turned on and off via HP software which I didn't have on a clean install (maybe the power driver needed that Spapakons mentioned).

But as it had Windows 11 on before without these issues, that kind of narrows it down to a) different hard drive b) changes after Windows 11 updates. Possibly. Although maybe I added HP support assistant last time and found a few extra drivers that way - can't remember. Not sure it would work on Windows 11 on an older machine.

Even if Windows Update automatically installs all drivers, it doesn't harm to install one or two drivers from manufacturer. I always download the latest graphics drivers to improve performance. The chipset drivers would improve compatibility and stability. If available install these first, then the graphics drivers and then anything else. You will be amazed how much performance improves by properly installing latest drivers, than relying on Windows Update.

Thanks. Assume the Windows 10 manufacturer drivers will all be suitable in Windows 11? Wasn't sure about that.

Yes, almost all Vista, 7, 8 and 10 64-bit drivers work in Windows 11. The known exceptions are some Intel graphics drivers for Windows 7 64-bit that are configured to stop installation on Windows 8 or higher. Intel prefers that we buy a new computer than upgrade our old to Windows 8 or higher. They think that by blocking the installation of drivers they will discourage us. Think again! There are ways to force Windows 7 drivers on Windows 8 or higher. Even modified ones to work on Windows 10 and 11 (such as the Intel GMA 4500 aka Mobile 4 family I installed on my test laptop).

The only exception to this I've run across is the Intel 915 -- and unfortunately, I have one of those in an old XP-era Gen 1 table that I used fondly for many years, upgrading from OS to OS until, when with Win8, MS stopped supporting XPDM drivers. I have searched far and wide for a modded driver that would work with WIn8/10, but I believe this is a hardware limitation.

Never found a working WDDM driver for Intel 915. In Windows 8/10/11 you are stuck with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter which has no hardware acceleration and system crawls Disable all visual effects (transparency, fades etc) to improve performance.
