Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

Possibly up to three things, definitely at least the last one.

First, you must disconnect from the internet before attempting to upgrade an unsupported device to 22H2.
Second, you must choose how Setup checks for updates as 'not for now'.
Last, you do not delete appraiserres.dll, it must be replaced with a dummy file of zero length. Make a 'New Text Document' on your desktop, rename it, and put that in place of the original one.

I have now successfully upgraded two unsupported devices with a 22H2 ISO made by the Media Creation Tool, and am currently upgraidng my third and last one.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Same for me I had to use the empty appraiserres.DLL fix it to get it to install along with disabling Malwarebytes.

Edit:
I found that when the laptop rebooted it remained on a blank/black screen & I had to force shutdown in order to continue with the upgrade. I don’t know whether to stay on 22H2 or go back to Windows 10 until it is no longer supported. I’m going to ponder over it then decide when 22H2 is released for Win 10.

I replaced the .dll in C:\Windows.~BT\sources after running Setup from an unmodified ISO has put a copy there. Worked for me.....

That worked, I opened appraiserres.dll, with Notepad changed some values from True to False and 22H2 installed.
I'm also sure that your method "replaced with a dummy file of zero length. Make a 'New Text Document' on your desktop, rename it, and put that in place of the original one." also works, will try it with a second laptop this weekend.

No, I updated them all with the .msu.

That is a very good idea though, I of course have system images I can go back to. I'll take my System Two back to 21H2, re-apply the 22H2 ISO, then wait and see.

I suspect there's a minor 'build classification' mod that MS forgot to make on their update servers when the .521 CU got promoted from RP to Release. Works fine when checking for updates as part of the upgrade through Windows Update, but kicks out an error when it tries to install after an ISO upgrade that didn't check for updates.

I'm letting my non-compatible computer stew on Windows 11 Home x64 Version 21H2 Build 22000.978 just to see if there's any WU action at all.

I also have my main computer (see 2nd system specs) still on version 22000.978 I didn't have the time to check it, but I guess I won't be offered the upgrade to 22H2 because of compatibility check. I will try to upgrade by replacing the appraiserres.dll file with an empty dummy. In any case I will let you know.

I've tried this previously -- does not work. As I, and others, have already said, you need to replace the existing dll file with one of zero length.

In my Fujitsu Stylistic laptop I installed the latest cumulative update and went to 22000.1042 As expected I wasn't offered the 22H2 upgrade because of compatibility check. I manually downloaded the ISO from Microsoft, replaced the appraiserres.dll file with an empty dummy and proceeded. Right now it is upgrading, hopefully successfully, I will report back.

Bad news. It had less than 10GB free space in C: and asked to use the SD card as external storage. While copying the files to hard disk it lost access to the SD card for some reason and hanged without being able to click OK to continue or do anything else. I forced shutdown, cleaned up the disk and retried. This time it had over 10GB free on C: so it didn't use the SD card. Unfortunately after copying some files (before the first restart) it showed a message that Windows 11 installation failed. I don't know what to try next :-(

How did you get the upgrade to start please, I keep getting error after the check for updates (clicking no)?

Replacing this file did work , costed me about 45 Minutes ..............but ,I guess , about three weeks to get all my previous setting the way they were before !!!
I did not noticed much important improvement , so went back to previous again.
imo; this upgrade is not wearth , all the troubles .
( made a Macrium-backup first , then went back , you never know !)

As I said I wasn't offered the upgrade through Windows Update because my laptop is not compliant. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft, mounted it and run Setup. Before proceeding I replaced the file with an empty dummy.

This file is now empty , replace the original in sources ..............

My non-compatible System Two is stewing at 11 Pro version 22H2, 22621.382 now, with the KB5017321 .521 CU consistently failing with error 0x800f0806.

This is by no means the first time an update has failed in this way, for 10 or 11. In my experience it seems to be specific to just the one particular update, a misconfiguration, or files missing at the server end. All other updates are unaffected. Since the ISO upgrade to 22H2 22621.382 I've already seen a sucessful KB5017026 .NET update and three Definition updates.

I'll leave it stewing like this to see if MS fix it at their end or, as is more usual, leave it as it is until it's superseded by a newer CU.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
