Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


A good backup for me would mean to clone my entire 480GB SSD on a spare disk at least once a week, so if everything bad happens I can restore 98-99% of my system. I don't have this kind of backup (shame to me...) but it makes sense to do one such backup right before I upgrade my main PC. Probably I will. I don't have a spare disk that large, so instead of a clone I will do a full image of my SSD on my 8TB external disk. This will take some hours, so I will reserve it when I have already downloaded the 23H2 ISO and have already tested it on another computer.

I like to do one full backup initially, and yes, that one takes a few minutes. After that, you can do incremental backups for rapid backup. I have my systems do an incremental every day. If I'm about to try something risky, I manually trigger another incremental right then and there and that typically takes mere seconds, especially because I backup to an SSD which is very fast.

I just updated my main PC (2nd system) to Windows 11 22H2 build 22621.2428 No issues observed, so go ahead and install all Windows updates to reach 22621.2428 Speaking from experience, I recommend installing all available update at 22H2 before attempting to upgrade to 23H2 (even those that will be overwritten) to maximize compatibility and minimize the risk of failure. I did the same before upgrading from XP to Vista, from Vista to 7, from 7 to 8 and so on. In XP I had even installed all compatible Microsoft .NET (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0) since I wanted to have everything and wasn't sure if I could install these over Vista. So make sure you have installed all 22H2 updates before going to 23H2 just in case. I would also update all my applications just in case.

Checked WU again, and it's doing Oct patch Tuesday updates now...

After doing everything... it still came up as 22621.2428 - 22H2

Well.... it didn't work for me. BUT... I'm on a local account and not an Insider. That may be why. :-)

No, it doesn't work if you wait until after the in-place upgrade has completed then use Windows Update to check for updates. It will only works if let the upgrade itself check for and install updates.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

It didn't "ask" me if I wanted updates. It just did them, before the In-Place started.


I mounted the ISO... ran setup.exe
It asked if I wanted to keep files and data.

Then it did a few updates without asking, then it went to the non-desktop screen with the % complete in upper left corner.
I've done In-Place Upgrades before.


It was kinda late... maybe I missed something?
I'll try it again in a few days.

Well, it it's always possible that MS have now fixed their mislabelling error for the 23H2 enablement package on the update servers that mistakenly lets the upgrade see and download it. As a test I'm running the upgrade now on my unsupported System Two (it's not going to be offered the 23H2 Feature Update anyway, so I might as well try it this way).

Normally yes, but not in this case. The only check for updates that can see and download the 23H2 enablement package is the one done by Setup during an in-place upgrade.

Same exact things as the last time I did this.


Only other thing I can think of is in Winaero I have Telemetry and Driver Updates disabled.
Maybe MS asks my computer something... (about 23H2), but because Telemetry is disabled... it can't answer.


The In-Place UN-checked Disable Telemetry... but left disable driver updates... checked.


Time to restore to the 10th. Back in 3-4 minutes.

22621.1702 is the build that's in the ISO - if Setup had downloaded updates (as it should have) then it would be saying it's 22621.2428, or even 22631.2428 if it got the 23H2 update as well.

I'll let you know when my test has completed. Do you have any idea just how slow it is to upgrade my System Two? (think 1st gen i5 and a spinner as its hard drive.) Its still in the blue screen stage and only saying '76% complete'.:lmao:

That's what I said before. I'm telling it to, but it's ignoring me. Maybe I made too much fun of Microsoft. :D
It came up .1702 the first time I tried this.
I can check for updates, after the fact and it will grab a few .NET Frameworks, and two CU that will bring it to 22621.2428, but still 22H2.
The first IPU I installed KB5027379 before the IPU... this time I didn't.

On a side note... after the In-Place it offered to install Armoury Crate... again. LOL
...both times I did the IPU


Yeah... but yours worked. Slow and steady, wins the race, eh? :-)

This was also my experience. I can fresh install under 10min, the in-place upgrade took a very long time.
And the only thing that worked was to replace the appraiserres.dll

That's OK - I had to do the appraiserres trick too - I'm upgrading on a 1st gen i5 machine :lmao:

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
