It resets the key and erases the drive in one operation. At no point does it give access to the encrypted data.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Does it have “ThinkShield Secure Wipe” in the bios?

From the bottom of your link....
Please use “ThinkShield Secure Wipe” feature for ThinkPad 2019 or later models by following below steps;
  1. Reboot the system
  2. Press F12 key to load BIOS boot menu
  3. Press tab to switch to App Menu
  4. Select "ThinkShield Secure Wipe" from the list
  5. Follow on-screen instructions to wipe the disk

No there's nothing in the bios. Had a good look. I mean there's nothing in boot menu/app menu - just set up, diagnostic splash screen, diagnostics.

Apparently it may be hidden under 'Hard Disk Password' in the bios screens. Watch this (all of it, so you see the risk warnings).

Just download a windows 11 iso and then use rufus . If i can do it anyone can

Will have a look but I'm pretty sure that's not in the bios. That erase download is a pain as well as it won't burn to usb - only to cd. Which is doable - but .........

My bios are different unfortunately. Nothing under hard disk password. AI says the download is ok for nvme as well as ssd (if it's correct!)

I think the suggestion was to use Rufus for writing the Lenovo erase tool's ISO file version to USB. Rufus can be used with other ISO images.

Ah sorry - no Rufus won't write it - doesn't recognise it. Read somewhere it's only for burning to cd. But it also mentioned downloading the floppy version. Although it might be easier just to burn to cd and I can't even see an option to download a floppy version. Edit - found the download for the floppy version ........... Apparently I can use Rufus to make the usb free-dos bootable though ..........

Extract the downloaded files to the USB drive, boot from it, and then run the DrvErase utility. Follow the on-screen instructions to erase the drive and reset the key"

Nope that didn't work. Created a free dos usb in rufus, extracted the floppy files to the usb. At boot, opted to choose to boot from a different drive, selected the usb drive, but it kept ignoring it and jumping back to windows boot. Secure boot is off.

I think I need to convert the drive back to mbr first (it was mbr to start with and I converted it to GPT to install Windows).

Nope. Tried two new usb drives. Neither would boot. (visible but ignored in the boot menu when selected). Seems they are now two dead usb drives as when I went to reformat them on another machine they don't even show up (not in disk management or diskpart either) so can't reformat them.

Edit - they eventually showed up on the other machine so reformatted them. Decided to send the Lenovo laptop back. Have re-set it back to where it was - not formatted to anything (not even msdos).

So I did contemplate just getting a replacement drive, taking the back off and replacing the drive. I like the fact the screen is set quite "high up" from the keyboard and it has a good keyboard. But ultimately decided to return it because it weighs an absolute ton! Not sure what it's made of but it's the heaviest laptop I have encountered 😂 It's incredibly heavy for the size. Not exactly portable.

It's so solid because it's built to withstand extreme treatment. My other favourite, the Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1 is the same.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

That's good in some ways, that it's solid and quite chunky. It's just maybe bigger and heavier than I needed to replace a 10" netbook I could just carry around in one hand. What I really miss is my 7" netbook! I can still use that but only with linux and hardly any linux fits on it now.

Install Windows 10 32-bit, keep Windows Defender or other antivirus updated and keep your 7" netbook as long as possible.

I have at least four working ones and multiple spare parts and batteries/chargers etc 😂 701sd with 8gb drive. The one I used had a replacement 64gb drive and had Windows 7 on it. It won't run Windows 10 though. Unfortunately the 64gb drive died and I haven't been able to find a replacement. It was nice with Windows 7 on.

My 14" laptop is my main workhorse but not so portable.

Yes my 10" Eee PC 1015PX is back on Windows 10 as well now - waiting for ESU :-) Also ended its Xubuntu stint! Although I might dual boot. It is still rather slow on Windows 10 - takes a bit of warming up!
