Macrium Free - can I store on private cloud and share

Hi folks

Seems Macrium Free edition has disappeared from the Macriun website - and I don't like things like "Filehorse" etc for retrieving things from. Is it legal (I've a copy of the setup program which still works) for me to host it on my own cloud space and share with people without running into "License" or Copyright problems.

Some companies these days get very jealous about their own stuff --even free software -- probably because they want people to convert to paid versions.

Any Lawyers here !!!!

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Pity as it will probably still work for Years afterwards -- Even I think Norton Ghost (before symantec version) still works !!! for some backups.

One needs to see who is taking over Macrium. -- Sometimes it's not always hideous as IBM have taken over Red Hat - a very successful business offering FREE Linux OS'es such as CENTOS and Fedora as well as free versions of its enterprise (and really robust server).

IBM / Aka Redhat still provide huge support to their open source Fedora platform which is used in developing their latest versions of the OS.

I'd trust them a million times more than Canonical who have taken over UBUNTU which unbelievably many people get suckered into using and sometimes even paying for.

Who ever thought I would have ever suggested IBM as an being "Ethical company supporting Open Source" -- Well things do change.

No one, as far as I (or Google) can see. Not even rumours of any takeover approach. Macrium is, and always has been a product of Paramount Software UK Limited.

Not trying to sound dumb or anything, but at least for me personally I haven't had very much luck when I used macrium free edition software. I'm wondering if there's a actual free alternative product ? Upon doing some additional research on my own I discovered this software which is free and seems to have all of the features I need. Free Windows Backup Solution for PCs and Endpoints

Hey @Bree that link you just posted takes one to the DLHF install file of Macrium 8.1. There's no free version for 8.1. Did you mean to list the links you posted some time back for Free 8.0.7279 x64 and x86?

No, the link is correct. The download agent ReflectDLHF.exe (Reflect DownLoad Home Free) will download the most recent version of the Reflect Free v8 installer, currently 8.0.7279. I've just tested and confirmed that....

What you are seeing is the build number of the download agent, what it actually downloads will be quite different.

Here's a fun tip, try renaming ReflectDLHF.exe before running it. What it offers as download options is entirely dependent on the name of the .exe file. Almost any name will offer the choice of Home or Free.....

...but rename it as ReflectFull.exe and it offers every available version except Free.

You could check out software from Easus and Aomei. Also TheFreeCountry has links to some freeware but some of them haven't been updated recently. The main thing to save yourself some grief may be to ask on the software forums for each program how well it works with your HD/SSD drives and controllers. The only real issues I had were on a PC with a RAID setup that was running Vista.

Try to have more than one type of backup until you are very confident in the restore mechanism. That's usually when the surprises pop up.

    I purchased this for $109 because it is the only Laptop I have seen with 1920x1080 resolution for the money. OK for streaming, email, etc..

Did you download from my link in post#5 or from somewhere else?

Check the name of the file you downloaded. It should be ReflectDLHF.exe. The filename actually determines the behaviour of the download agent, renaming it changes what it will offer to download. If it is named ReflectDLHT.exe then it will only offer Home as an option, but rename it to ReflectDLHF.exe and it will only offer Free. See post #13 for other names and options.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Did I miss that part o_O
I changed the name and tt downloaded and installed the FREE version👍. They want your name address and telephone number so I had to make them up. If I like it I'll ask them if there's a difference in this and the paid versions. Thing is, this is ONLY for home private use but they ask for your job title and business info as well so I put "home personal" in those slots. From what I've gleaned, the difference between paid and free is SUPPORT.

I was using Macrium Reflect 8 Free. The feature that prompted me to pay for the Home edition was Incremental Backups. If you have several incremental backups you can select how recent a backup to restore. Also the restore is much faster because it only makes required changes rather than just restoring the whole image. The faster you restore and get out the better the chances of success. Less time for some hardware glitch or power out to mess you up. Plus doing an incremental backup in a couple of minutes is more fun to watch than full backups that may take 10 times longer to complete. I have been doing Macrium since version 4 and have watched it evolve. If you are into programming reading their pros and cons of backup imaging techniques is interesting. It is on their website someplace. It took them many years of stepwise refinement to get it to the current level of sophistication.
