Solved Microsoft PC Manager.......??? Good, Bad, Otherwise???


Can anyone who has used this double-check if any changes were made to their hosts file please.
File is in %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers\etc
The file has no extension, is hidden and protected but try to check the date.
The content of mine was almost entirely wiped out as I block advertisers that way. (same file for 6 months till today)
The time of change reflects the time at which I did a full run of this app.
I have since uninstalled it. I suspect the built-in antivirus might have something to do with it.
I am not expecting anything malicious but modifying the hosts file is a no-no for me.

This is puzzling but it seems that you never edited your hosts file, so there would be no reason to modify it.

No, not on this (recent) installation. It's still virgin.

I'm more concerned about the fact that Chinese software isn't always, shall we say, 'clean' of anything unsavoury. Everything else you said I don't care about. To me Chinese software is potentially dodgy. I'd never install a Microsoft app from a third-party site anyway, that's why I was asking for an official link

Microsoft has regional and national offices and development centers all over the world. For instance, Belgrade, Serbia (before that ex. Yugoslavia) was regional center for whole Balkans but since few years ago it became national, Serbia development center, employing more than 100 and contracting with over 1000 (semi)independent developers.
I did some work (not SW related) for them late 1990s and in addition of great pay also got 2 licensed disks of W7 (still in use but upgraded to W10 and 11.
So any SW distributed by MS might be developed in one country or several countries and distributed thru others including own server(s) but all is regulated from Redmond.
Windows7, 8, 10 and 11 were introduced at special events and all visitors got free licenses.

Previously, if Firefox is used "Enable DNS over HTTPS", the host file was ignored.
Maybe it still works (now I use the system DoH).
I don't know about the Edge.
It's easier to block via 'ublock'.

Thank you for your reply but I wasn't referring to browser use at all. I am unsure where you got that idea.
I suspected the app mentioned in this thread did reset the hosts file.
I have since removed the app and my hosts file hasn't changed.

I just Updated Windows through MS PC Manager and it only took about 1/3 the time it normally takes to download and install a Cumulative Update......Worth it!!!

In my case it reset my HOST and deleted all my facebook and ZeroDot1 Coinblocker lists (n)
Good thing I keep a backup file.
