Solved Removing "Text Document"' from 'New' context menu...

I just checked again, I was wrong about the only key in HKCR\Local Settings\MrtCache that matches both Microsoft.Paint_ and _x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe being just an empty one. It isn't. It does contain a value with ShellNewDisplayName_Bmp still after all. We could try to figure out why your edited version of the batchfile doesn't seem to be working for BMP, but I don't think that letting the batchfile scan the whole registry for ShellNewDisplayName_Bmp would be such a good idea, because doing that would probably make it far too slow to be practical in any way.

I don't want you wasting your valuable time trying to figure out why my hacked version of your file didn't work. But it's worth noting that (when I'm using the "panaho" method, which seems to need repeating from time to time) when I open regedit and hit Find and paste in ShellNewDisplayName_Bmp and ShellNewDisplayName_Txt in turn, the searches only take about three-four seconds each. And so far, the F3 (repeat) search has brought up nothing at all, it just takes a short while (maybe 10 secs; I'm not sure) to get back to the key I just edited, in each case.

"findstr Microsoft.Paint_ ^| findstr _x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe`) do set "v=%%a" &call :_a v" so if your original worked on txt, I have no idea why my hack for bmp didn't.

So if I understand correctly, on your computer the only occurrence of ShellNewDisplayName_Bmp is also located someplace under HKCR\Local Settings\MrtCache just like it is on mine at least if it's still safe for me to assume that I can just ignore both HKCU and HKU? (HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKU = HKEY_USER.)

Yeah, that's right. It's precisely what ought to be working perfectly AFAIK (based on panaho's post #71 and everything that came after it in that thread), but somehow it still isn't.

The bitmap worked fine for me so did the txt from post in #6 but now the Bit map worked fine but the text document didn't any more.
I am happy now as @hdmi 's new bat file worked fine for me and all is good, I was just wondering if he could do the same for bitmap just in case it goes the same way as text document has.

Yep. That's the only one for the New > Bitmap Image. Clear that value data and it's gone, at least until something else puts it back.

The BMP version of the batchfile does work for me. Paint 11.2310.42.0

Okay, I just put back "Bitmap image" and "Text Document" as values, in the places the "panaho" solution told us to delete them from, checked the desktop context menu New flyout to make sure they were there again, then ran both batch files as Admin, and then restarted. Neither batch worked. But using the "panaho" solution DOES work, reliably. I think there may well be a registry complication here that we're missing.

You can substitute the line reg add "!%~1!" /v "!g!" /t REG_SZ /d "" /f with reg query "!%~1!" /v "!g!" and then open a command prompt as Admin to be able to see output when you run the batchfile inside this window. Here's the output I got from the BMP version:

So that's it then... as of Notepad 11.2311.33.0 and Paint 11.2311.28.0 these registry entries have been officially removed by Microsoft.

The good news is, Text document and Bitmap image were both gone immediately the moment when Microsoft Store finished updating Notepad and Paint. I didn't even need to reboot before they were gone. lol

My Bitmap Image came back after PT, but the reg value data deletion squelched it again. Why do I bother? I dunno. Only time I ever use New from the desktop is the very rare occasion when I make a new shortcut there.

Yep they sure are after updating to 22631.3007, running the original reg hack for BMP and the .bat for TXT file from previous posts and they are gone again.

I was just thinking about why I bother with this, and I realized that I just dislike having anything that's useless (at least, to me) in my menus. That's why I use a dozen or more of @Brink's reg edits on a new install, and that's why I'd give a 5-pointer here to anyone who could get rid of Get Started in the All Apps menu without bunging anything up.

Well i now have 2 batch files, 1 for each, i'll test them whenever the parasite entries re-appear.
