Solved Removing 'Bitmap image' from 'New' context menu...

Hi All,

did anyone figured out how to remove 'Bitmap image' from 'New' context menu?

Old Windows 10 registry tweak does not seems work anymore...

I can't test on 11, but works on 10

There is no ShellNew in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp on my Windows 11:

How ever there is still 'Bitmap image' in the 'New' context menu.

You're right.
- I had removed Bitmap image well before upgrading and had not noticed its return.
- I also notice that there's no HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew Key despite my having left that one in place before & it still appearing correctly now.
- The context menu re-implementation must be based on an entirely different method.

I've searched ElevenForum for previous mentions of this subject. I could not find any.
I've searched the Registry for possible entries of use to us. I could not find any.

Given that an entirely new method is in use, I doubt that any Windows 10 third-party tools will work.
- I'll give that ShellNewHandler thing a whirl but without any great expectations [I was last updated in 2013 so they won't be bringing out a Windows 11 version].
- It did not work. It did not list any correct Context menu, New entries. It did list some every old applications [from 1997] that weren't in Context menu, New anyway.
Perhaps another utility, such as TweakUI***, will come out in a Windows 11 version soon and that will address Context menu, New?

Added the next day: *** I was thinking of Winaero Tweaker; it works with Windows 11.

In the opposite case;

If you have uninstall store apps paint and notepad,
you lose your new bitmap and new text document context menu items.

And these registry entries don't work to add items to new context menu.

I brought this to Shawn Brink's attention a couple of weeks ago, when I found that the W10 fix didn't work on 11. He dug around and concluded that since the ShellNew key is missing in 11, shell-new-based approaches (all of the approaches we currently know of) can't work. I don't think it's a big enough thing for anyone to spend a whole lot of time on.

Feuer's post proves that removing entries from Context menu, New is possible. The mechanism exists to do it.

I searched the Registry for a Data entry Bitmap image but could not find one. I had hoped that that search would give me a starting point [I had worried that it would give me a hundred starting points].

Every man & his dog used to add an entry in Context menu, New but now that it has just a very small number of entries I can't get overly excited about it.
But what I don't yet know is whether or not the Context menu, New list is going to grow as I install new applications or update existing ones.

Could not remove the .bmp entry either (nor the .txt entry), but discovered something this morning: I associated the bitmap extension with XNView, ... ... and the entry in the New context menu is gone !

Okay, I'm going to see whether associating it with IrfanView does the same thing. Back soon.

Nope. All I get is a new occurrence of Irfan's "splat cat" icon.

I'm having trouble figuring out why associating .bmp files with anything would remove the .bmp entry from "New." Maybe if the program it's associated with is not on the computer? Nah.

If anybody else experiments with changing or removing something to see if it removes a Context menu, New entry please would they scan their Registry before and after [without making any other changes because that would confuse the results]. An appropriate tool is

Thanks for confirming. Evidently the two store apps (Paint and Notepad) are major players here, and if .bmp is associated with Paint and .txt is associated with Notepad, AND you uninstall those two store apps: ZAP!

How can I check whether or not the Paint & Notepad you refer to are store apps on my Windows 11 computer.
- I have not paid any attention to either of these in Windows 11 [I copied over my Windows 10 equivalents for day to day use].
- I have not altered any file associations since upgrading to Windows 11.
- I do not have a Start menu [as an insignificant by-product of enabling Taskbar Toolbars] so I can't even look at the default shortcuts to them.

I use the "Geek" Uninstaller for that: the menu has a (third) entry called "View", under which you can switch beteen showing all installed "store" apps and and all installed "normal" apps. ... And you can remove all store apps, while the way via "Settings\Applications" doesn't allow you to remove many (at least not all) store apps.

But be careful with removing the store apps (e.g. with "Edge" and the two (!) "App installer" entries). And be sure you don't need them anymore.
