Seniors and Windows11

Another one here. I am 73, and do some formal and informal computer support for others, which is the main reason that I have a windows boot option on my machines. The other reason is that, like other people here, I like to tinker with operating systems.

I plan to move the Windows 10 of my archlinux/windows dual-boot desktop to Windows 11 once I have figured out how best to deal with secure boot. The windows on my laptop stays at 10.

For me, OS changes are more of a challenge than a source of frustration. Good for mental flexibility. :wink:

I admit that I used a Start menu replacement under Windows 8. The poor integration of classical programs and Metro (later Modern) applications I found to be too awkward to tolerate. 10 was a significant improvement.

There's no need. .. Win10 is the same as 11. Win 11 has stricter hardware requirements and many don't have the money to get new parts. Key word... need. Tell me,,, why should anyone need to update to 11?

You made the the statement so it's incumbent for "you" to tell us why. Nice try though :)

And Windows 10 is not the same as Windows 11 otherwise it would still be called Windows 10. Yeah Microsoft could call Windows 11 Windows 10; they could have continued to call Windows 10 Windows 7, Windows 7 could have still been called Windows Vista; however, each of these iterations had major changes thus the name change. Windows 11 is no different :wink:

BTW, Windows 11 is more than just a prettier face....

But yes, for those not willing to make the jump to 11 at this point in time still have 4 years of Windows 10 support before deciding to upgrade.

Just because I don't agree with your opinion doesn't mean I don't respect what have to say. It simply means I don't agree with this given opinion. And why I posted my counter. Some don't agree with everything I say, yet we get long just fine. It's a forum, people are going to post opposing posts.

I have always upgraded to a new Microsoft operating system when they became available. However this is not just an upgrade to a new operating system, but Microsoft forces me to buy a new computer to use W11. My computer is working just fine, I can manage my own passwords and I prefer my network hard drive to the cloud. I will miss upgrading to W11.

I am mid sixties and I sympathize with having to learn how to do so much anew, especially when the changes make it more difficult, instead of less difficult to use (aside from the Windows 11 settings, which is a welcome improvement). I will probably stick with 11 dev and probably not pick up the initial October release, since there are some bugs that are fixed in devel but not the beta that affect me.

Windows 11 is a pastime for me, as is building my own PCs, overclocking, gaming, and etc. I am a technologist, always have been. I have been a developer in oodles of languages, OS and embedded OS, device drivers, and on oodles of hardware platforms and applications, a system and software designer, software project manager, and an IT services manager. I am also an avid nature photographer so I do need my system to be stable enough to do that.

So it is no bigee to me, but if I did not have, in part, most of this experience, I would probably stick to Windows 10. With that experience I can work around issues and/or easily revert back to 10. I do not think overall that what is going to be released in October will be an improvement over Windows 10 in terms of functionally and stability. I think in the long haul it will probably be.

Sorry - a bit long winded. Getting into lock-down mode again, sigh.

I have been using computer output since 64 (IBM 360) when in the military. My first personally owned computer was a Apple //e then went to Intel PC's. Now 80 years old. I am still intrigued by computers (I have a Mac Book Pro M1 and a Dell). I have been using Windows 11 since the first Beta came out (do not use Win 10 any longer). Looking forward to 10/5 and the Apple releases coming next week and then probably in October or November.

I think Jeff was saying there is "no reason to" not that '"no one should" upgrade. I agree there is nothing in 11 compelling people to upgrade (yet).

Hi Ak,

While I agree about the computer requirement, Windows 11 is not requiring you to use the cloud nor does it provide any password management.

Correct. I used the wrong wording in my first post. No one needs to upgrade. To me at least I don't see a compelling reason. While 11 is new and fresh it's functionally just about the same as 10 is. The change to the settings area and the overall GUI upgrade are nice and I like both. Those are the reasons I upgraded. But,, I don't see those as compelling reasons to upgrade.

11 may be slightly more secure but you can implement better security practices on 10 right now. The bottom line for me is this, upgrade if you want to but you really don't need to.

I'm afraid that's exactly what they will do. Maybe not right away, but in time. Especially if they feel not enough people are moving to 11. I'm keeping 11 on my Insider DEV machine and just moved my Release Preview machine to the Insider Beta channel. But I plan to keep 10 on my work PCs and laptop, although they are qualified to run 11. If Microsoft gets too pushy, I'll just turn TPM off.

I doubt MS will force you. They may make it very uncomfortable though. And you will not be able to take advantage of technological advances in hardware upgrades because they willl not be supported - but that is not MS forcing you.

I'm closing in on 82 rapidly, first computer in '92 was an AMD 80386/40MHz, 2 years later I retired before turning 55, got offered a job in a computer store which turned into building computers, been at it ever since both part time in a shop and freelance. Because of that I've been doing the upgrades and have several Desktops and Notebooks, one still has Win3.1 running on MS-DOS 6 and have WinXP, Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10 machines along with a couple of Linux Mint [Notebook and Desktop].
