Show off your internet speed!

Great to see speeds approaching 1Gbps are becoming more normal these days -- although in a lot of cases uploads still seem to be really slow. I'd expect to see uploads at least being 90% the speed of download speeds -- especially if you want to run any type of small Internet server.
The difference is in the technology used. When the ISP is using copper because of a limited bandwidth they have to offer a fast download paired with slow upload. When the ISP is using fiber the download and upload speeds can be about the same.

I have Comcast's Gigabyte Extra with 1200Mbps down & 35Mbps up. Comcast uses copper.

My new laptop has 802.11ax WiFi. Its wireless speed (shown below) is about 90% of the speed of a wired Ethernet connection.

Funny thing about internet speed. It is only as fast as the servers that pass the info to the user. I could have 1TB service yet still get buffering/loading issues or download speeds can suck etc. Obviously having dial up or say 25mb service will produce turtle speeds all around but higher speed doesnt necessarily mean just that speed. I do have 1TB service and it can still suck. Maybe Fiber is different but IDK.

Always true -- doesn't matter how much water is in the Atlantic Ocean if you can only access the water supply through a thimble or a 5 litre watering can.

Decent web sites are quite fast though = so are most streaming sites -- for 4and 8K UHD you need a decent speed or buffering will occur. If you are on a torrent site with only 1 slow seeder it can take a long time to get your file even if you have a 1 Tbps connection.

For those with decent Wifi (802.11ax) ensure it works at FULL and not HALF duplex. Change the settings in the NIC adapter properties.

Cheers

As far as I know WiFi always works at half duplex. I have three laptops. None of them even have a duplex setting for their WiFi adapters.

Fast WiFi is also beneficial if you have a local network. My new laptop has 802.11ax while the old one had 802.11ac. The new laptop copies files noticeably faster to another computer via WiFi when the other computer is connected with Ethernet. This is especially beneficial when my new laptop is doing its daily or weekly backups. It completes those in much less time than my old laptop.

Most computers today with an Ethernet port are rated 1Gbps. Even if you don't have fast Internet speeds having a router that has 1Gbps ports helps your local network speeds.

I upgraded my ARRIS Surfboard SB6190 to a SB8200
and now get a slightly faster connection.. on my 1Gbps plan with Comcast
Download = 926.76 Mbps
Upload = 23.63 Mbps

I was perplexed by your plan name. I am getting
Download = 932.30 Mbps
Upload = 42.08 Mbps

All my computers with an Ethernet port are Gigabit (1000 Mbps). That limits their speeds to that. I suspect that if one of my computers had a faster Ethernet port it would get a download speed closer to 1200 Mbps.

BTW, I have a Comcast XB8 Gateway. The problem with such fast Internet is that your wireless devices need to support Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax to take advantage of fast wireless speeds. My phone and new laptop supports that. My laptop gets the following wireless speed:
Download = 848.07 Mbps
Upload = 40.77 Mbps

Around April 2021 I started getting what was then called Gigabit Speed from Comcast. I just checked and see they renamed that plan to Gigabit Extra around January 2022. Here are the current plan names.

Gigabit: down/up = 1000/20 Mbps
Gigabit Extra: down/up = 1200/35 Mbps

Funny thing about internet speed. It is only as fast as the servers that pass the info to the user. I could have 1TB service yet still get buffering/loading issues or download speeds can suck etc. Obviously having dial up or say 25mb service will produce turtle speeds all around but higher speed doesnt necessarily mean just that speed. I do have 1TB service and it can still suck. Maybe Fiber is different but IDK.
Totally agree.

The very high speed connection between your computer and the ISP doesn't mean that you will be able to have high speed downloads, as most of the time, it is limited by the source.
My contract with my ISP was for 15Mbps. As other ISPs began to offer faster links, a competition began between ISPs and my download speed increased from 15 to 30, 60, 120, 250 and now 500Mbps for the same price (US$ 20).
I haven't seen a practical huge difference from 15 to 500Mbps. First, because I begin a download and then go to do something else. If it takes 1 min or 10 min doesn't make any difference. Second, because you never achieve those high Mbps from any site.

Some people are paying a fortune for something they never get.

Indeed most of the downloads are slightly slower than the 1GBit we have.
But sometimes the speed is doubled or tripled for a short time. Than for example some driver update or games are downloaded in no time.
It is funny to see the speed is actually pressed by my ISP.
I know they are experimenting with the new Docsis speed via cable and that it can be much faster than the 1GBit we have.
We can also skip the cable and use fiber (1000/1000) from another ISP, but for now I am happy with the overall Docsis speed. Only the 50MBit upload is bull, but that will (maybe) become 600MBit in the future. That high upload speed is interesting when you save a lot in the cloud often or download data from my home server for example when I connect remotely.
