Solved Tutorial for customizing a Windows 11 23H2 image

Hello everyone,

I have been looking for tutorials on customizing the image of Windows 11 Pro 23H2, but have not found one. I am currently working with 22H2. I have tried to do it using older info gleaned from the internets, but for some reason I cannot access a mounted image using DISM. Does anyone have or know of a current tutorial on the subject? Can it be done at all?

How have you mounted it?

copy install.wim out of the iso image. Then mount it.

I am mounting it using DISM. I copied the entire ISO and typed the path to the install.wim file.

what does that mean? extract the install.wim from the iso\sources folder onto a writeable location

did you mount it to an empty folder?

@tecknot, depending upon what exactly your goal is, I may be able to point you to what you need.

Could you provide some details on exactly what kind of customizations you want to perform? Are we talking just about slipstreaming in updates or do you want to do more like capture a completely customized installation of Windows?

Funny/strange thing is whenever I do a Get-AppxPackage, I get back info on my C drive installation. I mounted my image as "DISM /Mount-Wim /WimFile:H:\Windows_11_install\sources\install.wim /index:6 /MountDir:C:\Windows_11_install /optimize" (without quotes).

Hi hsehestedt,

I just want to create a customized install.wim file without some of the Windows packages like ClipChamp, etc. No slipstreaming or capturing an installed image.

Check out NTLite. NTLite

basically copy the windows ISO file into a folder and start NTLite, choose the Windows version, and follow the operations on the left of the window from the top, down. You can queue updates, add drivers, add and remove features, etc... the process into a new install ISO.

This is a fantastic program, but most of us had to make several attempts before we got the results we wanted. The free version has very little limitations and there are several places you have to press enter to continue, so it's up to you if you want to pay.

It was intimidating at first, but after a few trials and failures, I learned how to create a custom install ISO and a little more about how Windows works from the process.

I'm currently away from home with a laptop, so I'll respond back with more detail tomorrow (Saturday).

Before I sign off, one question:

Do you already know what changes you need to make? Is it simply a matter of needing how to access the Windows image with DISM or do you need more beyond that? How to mount the image and modify it with DISM I can easily answer, I just need to know where you want to go from there.

Cool... I don't know exactly what I want to remove from the image file. I don't know what's there. I am just having a problem accessing the image with DISM. I can do the rest if all the command lines are the same as they are.

I figured it out. I used this command line: "Dism.exe /Image:C:\mount /Get-Provisionedappxpackages" (without quotes, of course). Now I know what packages I can remove.
