I am very careful to exit all open programs using the FILE/EXIT or similar methods. I do not close out of programs by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When I select START/SHUT DOWN I am brough back to the login screen.

The only way power down at that point is to RESTART the computer and then once back to the login screen, I can SHUT DOWN from the login screen.

Welcome to the forum.

You say "When I select START/SHUT DOWN I am brough back to the login screen." I want to verify that on the start menu you are clicking on the
power button icon on bottom right, then shutdown. You do NOT logout first.

Please right click on your desktop and click new-shortcut. In the location box type
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
Next. Name it Shutdown. Then click on the shortcut to see if your system will shutdown. If it does, you can use this method until you can get to the bottom of why shutdown won't work from the power menu.

Here are some things to try to resolve your issue.

1. settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-power click run

2. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Once system file checker completes, make note if it found any file corruption and that it was able to repair it. (If it found corruption but was not able to repair it go to step 3)

3. From same command prompt type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
(note the spaces in this command)

If after these suggestions you are still unable to shut down from the power menu, report back. Also report back if you cannot use the shortcut to shutdown.

I've been using shutdown cmd on the taskbar since Win XP
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0 can be replaced with C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /p

Thank you for the response.
Your suggestion : 1. settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-power click run seems to have fixed the problem.

Clicking X is the same as File/Exit. . That's just the long way around. . Just like when people go to Edit>Copy, instead of using CTRL+C. . . It all does the same.

As for the shut down problem, that's unusual. I've never had that happen before.
