Why Windows 11 is a Big Deal to Me

Many interesting words, but I'm still sitting here, after reading all that, with my original question......
Why would I or any PC user want or need Windows 11?

TM

I have the hardware that meets the requirements. It's free. I can go back to Windows 10 if I want to. So, for me, the question is why would I NOT want Windows 11? It would be like a bartender saying, "We got this new beer, or whiskey. Want a free sample?"

Windows 11 is not even out yet officially unless you work for microsoft or are a tester or something.
True. It is not out in the completed, final, released form yet. However, it is available to everyone for testing purposes and is clearly very far along already. So for those interested in testing it and evaluating whether it might be something worth considering, it might be worth their time to test.

Even if you don't plan to run it on any current machines, it might be worth evaluating to see if you want to consider a new machine that has Windows 11 once realized.

In my case, it helped me to identify an issue with a software product. I was able to provide some very good specific feedback to the maker of the software and this may help them to have a fixed version ready at the time of release.

I also have a program that I have written which I am testing with Win 11 and have a tweaked version made only for Windows 11. Testing will allow me to have a fully customized version ready on the very day 11 releases.

That's part of the purpose for the group.. it's for testers, at the moment.

Well put. I wonder when MS started the development of 11. To me it seems that by what they've accomplished it has been some time.

They must have started quite some time ago as to me it seems ready for release or close to it. It could have been what was referred to as "Sun Valley" which was scrapped?? I like it .

I remember beta testing Windows 95 and having to download new builds overnight with a 33.6K phone modem.
Don't we all! I remember getting a package of humpty gazillion diskettes too. Either way, it took awhile to get going with a new version.

Oh yes.. I sure do. At work I had to install IBM OS/2 Ver 1.3 using 50+ disks,, that was a long day I wish I could have used OS/2 Warp.. it was on a CD. That was a really nice OS.

Many interesting words, but I'm still sitting here, after reading all that, with my original question......
Why would I or any PC user want or need Windows 11?

TM
Because it's there! I choose to test so I can learn all the ins and outs of the new OS, which will invariably replace what I now have, which is Windows 10.

So Windows 10 will last four more years. At this point, I'm pretty sure OEMs will discontinue updating/upgrading programs, utilities, and apps for Windows 10. They will probably need to concentrate on one or the other OS, and it seems to me since Windows 10 will be going into planned obsolescence, it would be a no brainer. Especially for the smaller OEMs.

Just my observations from being a beta tester since around 1985. We've gone from having to be invited to beta test Microsoft product to practically all beta testers being "fired" with the advent of Windows 8, to the current testing environment of a "wide open" Insider Preview of new product. It's out there for anyone to use if they have the correct hardware, so why not?

So, I say, "Why wouldn't anyone choose to install the Windows 11 Preview for testing purposes. It's going to be the next Windows operating system.

And, of course, there are some who will use Windows 11 as their daily OS . . . they're the ones who like to live dangerously.

I use 11 as a daily and it just works for me. Do I live dangerously? Na.. it's based on Win 10 and that's a solid OS all the issues in 11 are being addressed so I feel comfortable in using it.

The 'something' that anyone can try is to get the Dev build ISO through UUPDump. I'm 'none of the above' and certainly not signed up to the Insider program, but I have been testing the Insider builds on my machines since the first 22000.51 was released to the Dev channel.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I'm sitting here wondering what the conversation will look like in a few years when Windows goes full-on SaaS .. Microsoft Windows will actually be the "App" and users will be paying a monthly subscription in order to use it.

Who knows what its going to be like in a few more years. After Windows 11 Microsoft may decided to drop the name windows all together and it may just be called Microsoft OS.

Actually, no, not all programs are applications. If I write a program to solve a differential equation (or perform any other narrowly specialized task), then it's not an application. So all applications are programs, yes, but not all programs are applications.
Once upon a time, we classified programs as either applications or utilities. For a long time, it was easy to distinguish them from each other: an application (e.g., Word) made it possible for you to do something. A utility (e.g., Defragger) did something for you. You couldn't create anything with a utility. You couldn't get an application to do anything unless you interacted with it.

That distinction became blurred before long, but those of us who remember it probably still think of a calculator as a utility, but Power Shell as an application.

Hi folks
While I love using Linux and if you've got the time / inclination it can be very rewarding too -- but for most people who want to just switch on a computer and run things - one has to hand it to Windows -- it can run almost any sort of hardware and almost any application one can throw at it straight from Boot.

I know some on these boards think I'm a Windows hater -- far from it --Windows made personal computing far more main stream than any other development and where where would a load of us be now without decent Internet browsers, e-commerce, video conferencing and the like.

OK a few mistakes Ms made on the way --e.g VISTA, and above all Win 8 but they are back on track again.

I actually like W11 ==> seems decently slick and does what I need it to do -- so why should I be agnostic on it. I'm not going to stop using Linux as my main desktop --it's a multi-user system with a load of huge advantages over a single user system like Windows -- but Windows runs very well in a VM these days. and certain programs e.g most of the Office Suite even if there are "Clones" out there still aren't a patch on the real thing.

So hopefully Windows will still be around eventually to celebrate it's 50th Birthday -- (and that's from a Linux "bigot" too !!)

Cheers
jimbo

OH Gawd! How many years has it been since "we" formatted 5.25" floppy disks, or even 3.5" floppies for that matter???
Modern PC's don't even come with floppy drives. Heck, most laptops don't even come with DVD drives.
So "pity the fool" who can't format a Flash Drive!
I recently cleaned out my 'shop' and threw away several 5.25" floppy drives (my last) , and a whole stack of 3.5" drives. I don't even have a PC with a floppy drive port on the motherboard anymore.
I can't begin to tell y'all how many floppy disks I've thrown away, all except my Commodore 64 disks.

So why is anyone even talking about that anymore? Cheech! Don't we have more pressing matters to attend to?
Like why has MS gotten to exclusive that it's newest OS won't install on PC's that run everything else from DOS to Win-10?
All ten of mine do!

First of all, let me throw in that I'm not directing this at you, or at any one person, but replying to the whole concept of app vs application vs program.

The reason the lines became blurred because of the fact that utilities started giving us aspects of applications, while applications started giving us aspects of utilities. When the distinction between the two became too narrow, it was easier to lump them together into one catch phrase. If I had my way we'd still call all of the features of an OS that the user made use of regularly an application, and the stuff that they almost never use (but that advanced / power users tend to use more) utilities. Windows 11 refers to the 'utilities' built in to the OS now as "Windows Tools" to differentiate them (somewhat) from regular applications that the user will use more often.

And let's be clear, I didn't respond earlier because I didn't want to start an argument - but the saying a program to solve differential equations is not an application shows that different people have different definitions, and no matter what you say they are subjective, not written in stone. Because a program that solves differential equations, for example, can be used by a person to solve a differential equation, but on the flip side, it can just as easily be argued that it (the program) is doing it for you - at the heart of which is what the function of every single program is. Even if you write a simple, one line "Hello, World!" program, you're using the program to display output in the manner of your choosing - but at the same time, the program is doing something for you, displaying said output.

In the interest of not perpetuating that argument anymore than it already has, it's just easier to refer to programs that any given user has access to as an application - which I would have thought was pretty self-evident when I said all programs. But apparently not. And yet it spawned this discussion. Talk to an average user who doesn't know a thing about how programs are written, and just wants to accomplish a task, or multiple tasks, and you'll find a user who doesn't care about any of the other intricacies of software development - as long as it works for them. Similarly, referring to applications as programs and programs as application means absolutely nothing to them - they are one and the same. And with humans' need to make things shorter, it's only natural that application --> app. It's easier to say, it's easier to understand, and this need to have the masses onboard with jargon they are willing to use is nothing new - it's been going on for millennia.

Lol. I'm old enough to have done all that and then some myself. Some people don't like to change, or, more appropriately, learn something a certain way and assume that is the only correct way of doing things. Sometimes that is applicable - other times it is not. I think I still have some 5.25s around, I definitely have 3.5s around, I've posted them enough times in various DMG sites. But the average user doesn't want to have to think about those kinds of things. They just want stuff to work - and leave all the rest of enthusiasts / advanced / power users like most of us in here.
