Why Windows 11 is a Big Deal to Me

The thing is - no one is forcing you to use anything or buy anything.
No but MS scared people into moving from W7 to W10 citing W7 was no longer secure. So they were forcing people in a way. Wait till 2 years have passed and they will do same again.

The key difference is W10 would run on most pcs but the same is not so true for W11.

So yeah they will force people by scaring them and that is disingenuous.

True, but my W7 machines are still getting definition and engine updates for their MSE AV through Windows Update and will continue to do so until January 2023, three years after W7 reached end of support. This is the one part of the paid-for ESU program that is free for all users, not just businesses that have subscribed for Extended Security Updates.

I suspect W10 will get a similar 3 years of ESU paid for support after 2024, and would expect Defender at least to continue getting its updates.

The real truth is sad to say it is that Microsoft like other technology companies doesn't really care about its users. They are all out just to make money . That is how it always is and always will be.

The real truth is also the fact that Microsoft has never taken away your choice to look to other OS alternatives. This isn't to be flippant, but if you're going to make those claims, then you also have to accept the fact that you also have a choice.

I already covered why this happens. If the people were to take the time and actually learn about their computers instead of "turn on, open Facebook, react, watch, play games, react, play more games, open email check email, send grandma new pics, close email play more games, close FB and go to bed" then this could not happen.

You cannot take advantage of the educated. But if the people don't want to know, no matter how disingenuous you say it is, it's absolutely no different than any other corporation out there trying to sell you a product while their only real agenda is to maximize their RoI. And let's face it - the people let themselves be scared - which is the crux of the matter here.

Again, you're not forced to do anything, even if you may think otherwise. Being convinced to do something is not the same as being forced.

Most people don't know about this because they don't want to take the time to learn about this, so will just complain and then move on.

The real truth is sad to say it is that Microsoft like other technology companies doesn't really care about its users. They are all out just to make money . That is how it always is and always will be.

It's the definition of a corporation. You have stocks and bonds, ergo you have investors, ergo you have to make the investors happy.

The real truth is also the fact that Microsoft has never taken away your choice to look to other OS alternatives. This isn't to be flippant, but if you're going to make those claims, then you also have to accept the fact that you also have a choice.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This 100%

True but ESU is progressively expensive and I bet 99% of domestic consumers do not even know this exists, let alone be prepared to pay for it.

Because they don't want to know about it.

The reason forums like this place exist, is because techies want more information on how to solve an issue, or how better to accomplish a task, or recommendations on alternative to the software they use, that kind of thing. The vast majority of people don't come to forums like this, they contact tech support to get things fixed - either their OEM, or their OS dev, or their software devs, whomever - because at the end of the day, they have things they need to get done, and simply don't have the time to spend fixing computer stuff.

It's why I've had a job all these years. I do what others don't want to do. I fix that ^%@#%$ that they don't want to touch because they don't understand. Same holds true (in reverse) for my car maintenance. I have picked up stuff here and there, but for major maintenance I don't do it myself - I take it to someone who has done this most of his / her life. When my body needs fixing I go to an appropriate physician, who has trained for a good part of their life on how to fix my ailments.

Actually, it's the other way around. They were programs (or computer programs) first, which later became known as applications. When I worked at a chemical plant, I used a program called Ami Pro. I also used a program called Word Star. We had specific programs to gauge the amount of gasoline created; maintenance of the Coker Unit, etc. From Lyondell, I moved to a Philips chemical plant where I used a program to record "recipes" for the various chemical products. Throughout most of my working life, I used Programs.

Programs have now become applications, and the line has totally blurred between programs/applications and utilities.
Hi there

I don't see anything wring with the word application -- programs are merely tools to create applications. One doesn't call a Screwdriver a piece of manufactured steel for example. Then how would you distinguish say between a steel rail and a screwdriver.

Even back in what some call "The good old days" one used tools like Lotus 123 or "word processors" to create articles, company profit and loss accounts etc.

What has changed is that the hardware has changed beyond all recognition in that even the simplest phone "app" would have taken a load of programming on an older computer --if even possible -- these days with A.I, decent OO and procederal languages such as python one can create "an app" quite quickly without having to really understand the mechanics of programming but just concentrate on the application.

For instance I don't need all the info in how to create a screen and provide user input if a procederal language just says "Create sicreen", add objects, display screen, accept user input from object x etc etc. etc etc.

The "tech boys" can do all the "hard stuff" -- so that leaves folks like me who can concentrate on what the application / task needs to do and how the user interacts with it.

Cheers
jimbo

As I said, the AV definitions and engine updates are free and being delivered automatically to everyone on W7 until the end of ESU. Domestic consumers are still getting their Microsoft AV kept up to date. It's the OS patches that are paid for.

Windows Eleven is a big deal to me.
It's one more than ten and by golly it's free.
I know that you'll like it as much as I do.
It does all this fun stuff that's totally new.

I can run all my programs all at the same time.
And even on smart phones it seems to run fine.
It runs on my tablet and on my laptop.
I start it each morning and it never stops.

It plays all my games with some fast fps.
It balances checkbooks, I don't have to guess.
It keeps my to-do list for all of the week.

I can't say I was excited by windows 11, but I wasn't worried about it either.
I put it on my system yesterday, ran through some tests of my most used applications and games pulled up some IDE's for projects and ran some tests with that.

No issues at all so far. In fact an issue I'd been contending with on Win 10 is gone now.

Absolutely loving the Auto HDR feature. Sure its not giving us the full whammy HDR and that's ok but it is a drastic improvement.

I like the UI changes, I've never been one to care about change, accept it and move on.
I do like the corner radius addition as it just softens up the windows.

I love the new menu's and settings pages, maybe because I'm doing the exact same thing in a work project it just makes sense to me.

Only really got a couple of issues with it, synched contacts in teams pulls from a very out dated list and can't be edited easily.
And time...on all displays or there lack of, a rather dubious choice given the main display is likely the one to host a full screen app and the only one to display the time too.

The real truth is sad to say it is that Microsoft like other technology companies doesn't really care about its users. They are all out just to make money . That is how it always is and always will be.
I don't understand the "care" bit. A corporation is not a charity. Any corporation exists in order to make money for its shareholders. Now, to make money, they need to offer a decent product and any relevant services that people will pay for. How are they doing that exactly? That's for the current corporate leadership to decide. Ultimately, if customers will be unhappy with the offered products and services, they will quit paying for them and the corporation will start losing money, at which point they either do something about it or disappear.

The so-called "care" is in fact a service or, if you wish, a marketing scheme. If you are a loyal customer repeatedly buying a product, a corporation may through you a few perks just to keep you happy. The more money you spend, the more perks you get. This is how it works with airlines, car companies, hotel chains, etc. With technology companies, customers are in tens of millions, so apart from occasional discount campaigns, there are no visible perks (I'm not sure whether Windows MVPs get anything of a value, but these guys are donating a whole lot of their time, so I'd say they should). Hence, there is no "care" aspect. If you expect Microsoft to make Windows more convenient to you personally (or to a group of like-minded enthusiasts), then you are mistaken. They don't know you exist.

The two biggest things I take from Windows 11 is how much more snappier it is, and its improved appearance. Yeah, I know some hate the appearance changes, but I actually love it. It's about time Microsoft changed up the appearance. One of the things I really liked about Vista was the Aero Glass. Glad to see 11 pushing it further.

Really can't wait to install it on my desktop so I can fully appreciate how it handles fully supported hardware as well as gaming. For the time being I'm running it on my daily use 2017 Lenovo laptop and all it good thus far, but my desktop has far more critical apps so I'd rather wait for a non-beta release and clean installing on the desktop.

Yes, one has to get use to all the stuff that's been moved or removed; yes, there will be some frustrations because of those changes, yes, the OS demands newer hardware (my desktop meets all the requirements), but for a PC enthusiast like me running the pre-release, I'm prepared (y)

Interestingly enough, I've had one major issue with BT Pairing and connecting to my XBox Elite 2 Wireless controller all but disappear as well. I cannot be 100% sure if it is Windows 11, newer BT drivers from Intel, or a conbination thereof - but I'm not complaining! lol

The two biggest things I take from Windows 11 is how much more snappier it is, and its improved appearance. Yeah, I know some hate the appearance changes, but I actually love it. Come over to the dark side!

Seriously, as @Ptolomios said, the auto HDR feature alone has made gaming much, much better. I put it on my desktop before my laptop (that is another disaster story on its own) and am quite happy that I did, even with 2 clean installs and a failed install of 22454 5 different times using 3 different methods lol.

No, I get why you've not done so if your need for stability is at or near Mission Critical levels. But when you finally do, you'll understand just how beautiful gaming has gotten for me - using a 4K monitor and a GTX 970 driving it, via Windows 11.

I'm pretty sure those who have systems that can't run Windows 11 will wait; however, as hardware begins to fail, more and more folks will be forced to upgrade.

Those of us who have systems that can run Windows 11 will be more inclined to upgrade. It's just the nature of the beastie . . .
That is one thing that bothers me. Many many people rely on cheap used laptops and can’t afford new ones - and most of them wouldn’t want or couldn’t get on with Linux. But I guess by the time Windows 10 ends there will be a few used laptops available (but nothing older than four snd a half years so not that cheap). For example my Dad’s old laptop runs great - updates from W7 to W10. Only worth about £50 and 9 years old but to someone with no money who needs a computer it’s a great computer!

It's the definition of a corporation. You have stocks and bonds, ergo you have investors, ergo you have to make the investors happy.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This 100%

I have just noticed your title :-). A word my Father drummed into me at a young age saying it was the longest word in the dictionary. I wonder if it still is? Only difference was m on the end instead of t (ie ism) :)

I guess by the time Windows 10 ends there will be a few used laptops available (but nothing older than four and a half years so not that cheap)
The TPM 2.0 specification was released in 2014, and the first Intel 8th gen processors were released on 5th October 2017. So PCs that are supported for Windows 11 could have first started appearing in 2018. Probably not many at first, but by 2020 there were plenty to choose from. My System One is a late 2020 model.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
