If you go to settings -> privacy and security. there will be an entry for Device Encryption under the Security tab if your build supports it. My desktops on 24H2 don't have it, but the Laptop I've just clean-installed does. All my PCs are Home edition.

Wait. BitLocker DRIVE encryption vs DEVICE encryption. I want to make sure my HARD DRIVE encryption is OFF so I can play around with 24H2 and 23H2 (in case 24H2 breaks and return back to 23H2 from image backup)

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Yes, but as with everything 'Windows' there are many ways to achieve the same ends. I like the simplicity of using a command prompt ;)

For reasons I don't remember, I skipped Windows ME. For me, Windows Vista was awful. I tried it, hated it and switched to Linux. If it wasn't for Windows 7, I'm not sure if I would have come back to Windows.

on clean install of 24H2 encrypting drives without initial specific user input (horror show, that).

Thanks for clearing that up. You've given a good deal of relief.

What a horrid little trap MS set for its' own commercial gain from the "STORE". My instinct has always been to avoid "signing up" to anything if at all possible - that includes an MS account.

after the actual nightmare of the upgrade itself on two AiO desktop systems 24H2 is now running OK.
the systems have the same minor problems as everyone else, SFC and the 16GB of unclearable files but it did give me the chance of partitioning my wife's system M2 type SSD. 250GB C: Windows and 750GB D: Home which is the first time that i have had an opportunity to do in nearly 2 years.
which should give a little bit more of a safe guard on all personal data.

now i will start on the laptops. best of luck, Steve ..

i can only think that the latest update caused some BSOD in DCS, because I have not gotten BSOD in ages. I am one of those that find the updates with new stuff worthless rap I don't need. I am pissed. I wish I could offer proof. But seeing to how I never got the BSOD until the latest update, it must be the cause.

The following is what Copilot says about 24H2 and Encryption (I have highlighted some important sections in bold). I just wish I had known about it before performing a clean install of 24H2 (see my previous post).

Windows 11 version 24H2, the upcoming version of the OS, enables Bitlocker device encryption on a wider range of devices. This will happen even on devices running Windows 11 Home. Previously, the OS checked the BIOS settings for the OEM configuration. And in the Home edition, encryption was omitted. Also, the company has removed checks for Modern Standby/HSTI and DMA ports, so encryption is now automatically enabled on more devices during a clean install of Windows 11.

The user may not be aware that Windows has automatically encrypted their hard drives. If you subsequently need to reinstall the operating system, and the BitLocker recovery key is not saved, then all user data will be lost. This would not be that critical if Windows only encrypted the system drive (C:), and not all the drives.

Additionally, BitLocker encryption can have a significant impact on device performance, even when using ultra-fast SSDs such as PCIe Gen4 NVMe. The fact is that during read and write operations, Windows 11 is constantly encrypting and decrypting data. Performance losses can reach 45% in some of the scenarios.

If you are aware of the encryption existence, you can disable it under Settings > Security & Protection > Device Encryption. But if you are not aware, it can become an unexpected disaster. So it is a good idea to learn how to disable the feature.

Here are the steps you need to take in order to prevent Windows 11 from encrypting the drives during its setup.

  1. When installing Windows 11, wait for the Region selection (OOBE).
    Region selection in OOBE
  2. On the Region and country screen, press Shift + F10.
  3. A command prompt will open. There, type reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BitLocker /v PreventDeviceEncryption /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f, and press Enter.
  4. Now type exit, or simply close the command prompt.
  5. Continue installing Windows 11 as usual. It won't encrypt your drive.
You are done!

I've come across some reports in Internet about potential issues with the WD SN770 and WD SN580 drives. I have one of these myself. So far, I've had good experiences with Windows 24H2 (26100.1882), but I'm not quite sure what the best next step would be. Should I disable updates, or is this something that only occurs in rare cases, like when using RAID?

Vista came with what was an even more broken CBS, IIRC. It was fixed with service packs. Windows Update was also more likely to fail with an error code, randomly, for important updates! Same with 7! :ffs: Even when it didn't seem as random as with 8x, as I traced the Windows 7 error code 0x80080005 issue to an early-2010s 7 update. With 7 SP1, you have to install one update at a time and reboot many times, just to work around the dreaded 0x80080005 bug. Yep, that means, install each update in chronological order!

Looks like you need to disable HMB for Western Digital SSDs, because of the dreaded "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" BSOD.

Red flag. You have a Raptor Lake in the sig, and you suddenly got a BSOD. It's unfortunately likely that you have rapid-Raptor Lake-degradation syndrome. Lots of 13th-gen and 14th-gen Core i chips are failing. Even more likely with 13900s and 14900s.

Prepare to RMA the CPU with Intel, if that option is available.
