Hi, I am in bsnl fibre net connection having digisol modem and configured to get both ethernet and wifi support to devices.
I am having older window version pc, which is in working condition.
I am also having a broadband modem configured in Broadband connection and it is already configured.
I am having dlink dwa 131 nano adaptor to get wifi to my older system. The ethernet port is damaged so, I could only use wifi access in that pc.
Now my query is. Can I use my bb modem to boost my signal to the older computer by configuring to access the signal from the digisol, the fibre connection modem, and boost my wifi signal.
I know that my previous bb modem supports upto 802.11n.
I also know that my dlink wifi dwa 131 modem supports up to that signal only.
Can I configure my previous modem dlink 2750 u to boost my wifi signal, as the internet speed is very slow in my old computer.
can i use that modem anyway so that i get good signal to the place , two room away.

Yes you can. However, If you have an ethernet cable from your existing router into that room, I suggest you configure it as an access point rather than a repeater. This not only extends your wireless range, but will also let you connect that computer or your next computer using ethernet if you so desire. (if you ever get it's ethernet port fixed)

A repeater halves your bandwidth whereas an AP does not. You do have to use the ethernet cable from your existing router in order to use the old router as an AP. How to turn an old Wi-Fi router into an access point

With an AP all DHCP handling is handled by your existing router. DHCP MUST BE TURNED OFF in the secondary router when using an as access point.

If you do not have an ethernet cable from the main router to the other room, you will have to set the old router up as a repeater/extender which will result in 50% loss of bandwidth (ie speed)

The problem is that my ethernet port has been damaged and I have to change the mb if I have to use the port. That being said, I am trying to boost my wifi speed.
Could change of wifi nano adapter will give solution to boost the speed please tell. I am now getting connection to the computer, by using dllink dwa 131 nano adapter which gives support up to 802.11N.
If I am going to loose 50% signal, then I think that there is no use in trying the repeater technique

I understand that your ethernet port in the computer is damaged. That's not what I said.Do you have a cable going from your working router into that room? Correct? If you ever ran that computer wired in that room, you would have to have one..That's the cable you need to create an AP. You can still run your computer wireless, but instead of running it wirelessly from your existing router, you will connect it to the new network that will be created with the AP router.

If not, then you have no alternative but to turn that old router into a repeater which will halve you speed.

Do you mean the length of ethernet cable . Ofcourse, I have.
Please tell me how to do that.
The router, the present fibre digisol router, has 192.168.1.1
The dlink router has the same router page ip. Should I need to change to something fixed other than this ip
Please give me step by step .
First let me check , if the digisol router has extra ethernet ports

Yes you will have to change the ip address of your old router. It's in the instructions. You will have to do this with your computer disconnected temporarily from the new router or you will get a conflict.
Detailed steps are in article posted in thread #4 above but here it is again. How to turn an old Wi-Fi router into an access point
Another detailed tutorial. How to use an old router as an Access Point in order to expand your wireless network – MBReviews
and another. How To Convert a Wireless Router into an Access Point - SmallNetBuilder

You might want to watch a youtube video before you begin. Just do a search "How to turn old router into access point youtube"

Let me add this.. Along with disabling DHCP in the AP router, I suggest you also disable NAT (Network address translation) and port forwarding. Start by resetting the old router to factory default. Keep in mind while optioning this router the administrative setup pages differ from router to router so the tutorials are generic, but the settings should be the same. When I set up my old router as an AP, I found I didn't have to change all that many options.

If you need it Dlink 2750u user manual here

Hi, glasscuter, nice of you.
But tell me if it is enough, if i connect the ethernet cable from new router to old router.
If that is the case, how could I access the router page which is same as that of the new router, ie 192.168.1.1
I know how to configure, as there is a wizard and I can disable nat and port forwarding in the old router.
But how do I access the router page, please tell.

You do have to temporarily connect the old router to some computer with an ethernet adapter long enough to set the options.. If the PC with the broken ethernet adapter is the only device you have with an ethernet connection, borrow someone's old laptop that has one. OR you can buy a usb ethernet adapter for about $10 USD. To set the options you connect one end of an ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on old router, other end to computer.

Ok. I somehow manage to set options as you said. Then how to access the router with the same ip.
After setting the options , can i just connect the ethernet cable to the old router ether port with the available ethernet port in the fibre onu router.
Sincerely i say that this is the first time that I use fibre brand connection which is having an entirely different set of wire connection with the router.
I will have to check that also to be connected via the ethernet

Sorry, Jraju. I don't understand your last question. FOR routers that DO NOT have an AP switch setting in its administrative settings, in any one of the links I gave, it says you assign your old router an ip address within the range of your new one.

Here's what I did with mine.

1. my master router uses uses 192.168.0.1 With an SSID of glasskuter

2. I reset my old router to factory default.

3.I assigned my old router an ip address of 192.168.0.2.

4. I turned off DHCP in old router

5. I wanted my old router to broadcast a separate SSID so I could differentiate which router my wireless devices connected to. I assigned my old router SSID as glasskuter1 with same security key (password) as master router. You can assign a different PW if you wish.
NOTE: This is your choice.
if you want devices to connect to either one automatically, you change its name & PW to be the same as that of your master router. If you want to keep the names separate in order to know you're connected to one router of the other, you give old router a different network name. Either way, all devices connected to either router will be part of the same network.

6. I turned off old router and connected an ethernet cable from master router LAN port to old router LAN port.

7. I turned on new router and now have 2 network names broadcasted in the list of available networks.

You can now access the administrative setting of either router from any device on your network simply by entering its own ip address into any browser.

If you set it up as an access point, speeds should be approx. what you are seeing now throughout your network. If you see a much lower speed report back because it would mean you managed to set it up as a repeater or bridge.

Is dlink dwa 131 enough or should I change that also.
I plan like this. Put off the internet totally.
use the usb ethernet adapter and access the router page.
change the access point to something other than the new router ip, 1
1.
Then disable nat and then remove the usb ethernet adapter to use the wifi adapter again.
connnect the Lan of nrew router to the old router lan and access the wifi signal.
will try and report back.

I plan like this. Put off the internet totally. Yes

use the usb ethernet adapter and access the router page. Yes

change the access point to something other than the new router ip, 1
1. Yes, it can be any ip within the master router subset range, I always set mine as the first available ip only because it's easy to remember.

Then disable nat and then remove the usb ethernet adapter to use the wifi adapter again. VERY IMPORTANT> YOU MUST ALSO MAKE SURE DHCP IS DISABLED IN OLD ROUTER.Disabling NAT is optional, disabling DHCP is mandatory.

connnect the Lan of nrew router to the old router lan and access the wifi signal.YES
will try and report back.

No it won't. It is rated at 802.11n: 150Mbps. It won't go any faster than that. What you have done by connecting the 2 routers is increase your wireless range and signal strength. Your throughput speed depends on what speed you get from your internet service provider. The only amount of extra speed you might get will be due to the fact you increased the strength of your wireless signal and that signal should be more stable..
