I use 7-Zip
Command Line version is life-saver for my backup process.

It even has a build-in checksum information tool.

Agreed, BUT... I find that this difference in size (between .7z and .rar) is negligible in comparison to the difference in speed. So, WinRAR not only wins in pure terms of speed, but also wins in terms of the logical tradeoff that exists between getting smaller archive sizes and getting results faster (especially on low-powered devices). Besides, creating a .zip archive (which is still the most prevalent format for archiving of files) also goes faster with WinRAR.

It is not quite that black and white. For defaults, you're absolutely correct though. But for apples to apples comparison, 7zip beats Winrar in compression speed and extraction speed while still achieving a slightly smaller or similar file size.

WinRAR is the easier app to use for quick compression, but that is Windows only, which is a bummer.😞

If we include some very specific compression algorithms for specific type of data, those exist too, are difficult to use but blows any of the popular compression algorithms out of the water with 10-25x better compression ratio. They are very very slow though. I'm talking about hard to compress data that can be squeezed from 1GB into tens of MBs. How one can achieve this, I have no clue. Very impressive nevertheless.

I used to use WinRAR, then tried 7-Zip and stayed on 7-Zip for all ".zip", ".rar", etc, files.
7-Zip is ever so simple with no app clutter.
