After seeing this thread - Switch from Beta to Dev builds stuck at 61% - I have hope that this is actually possible. Unfortunately, every search result I find is going the other direction. Can someone please explain how this is done?

No, that's the problem - the search results I've seen reference a Windows Insider setting that just doesn't exist for me. It's only a test VM, so if I need to reinstall it's no big deal.

Sometimes Microsoft give you option to change the channels but when that will happen no idea.

Sounds like flightsigning has been switched off if you cannot see options to change from Beta to Dev.

Code:
bcdedit /set flightsigning on

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} flightsigning on

pause

Copy text above into a .bat file and run it in Beta version with admin rights and restart Beta version.

Then you should see option to select Dev.

Will definitely save this for the future. Since I had nothing else to do, I already rebuilt the VM with the Dev channel.

It sounds like you may have installed the Insider Beta build by getting an ISO from UUPDump, rather than signing up as an Insider. All the instructions you'll find in Google for switching Insider channels describe the Insider settings you'd only see if you had joined the Insider Program.

For those of us who aren't Insiders there's a useful little script that can enrol you in the channel of your choice, or can switch channels.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
