PC World I think was one we imported to Australia, unless we had our own version, I can’t remember. The only thing that could of been better would of been if they had a Mad Magazine type folding back page :D 😄

I think I can remember one of the magazines being recalled because of a virus on the CD, back when viruses were a thing.
Speaking of viruses; I can't remember seeing a virus in decades, but that's another story for another thread.

I think I might still have some of those old application CDs kicking around. I'm slowly getting around to building another PC for the purpose of checking out dubious software. That way I won't be messing up my main PCs in the process. I have a feeling this will lead to quite the coaster collection as well but :::shrugs::: gotta start somewhere.

I remember when Norton was a reliable name -- Norton Utilities and Norton Ghost (believe it or not it still works in some cases. I got both those on the PC mag free CD -- as well as the excellent at the time XTREE. Even now it makes windows explorer look like a load of rubbish.

Actually this brings me back to the thread again -- Current Windows defender is more than sufficient for security on domestic machines. There's 100% no need for 3rd party security apps these days -- in fact Windows itself recently seems to be doing a perfectly good job itself of stopping users from even booting up their systems.

My first file explorer was Xtree Gold. It was great. I also had Norton Utilities back in the good old days (late 80s). Those were great apps.

My personal computer security suite is Bitdefender Total Security with Malwarebytes Premium. I have Windows Defender do periodic scans, but its real-time protection is disabled.

That combination was chosen because of my experience with malware identification and removal. I want maximum protection.

I am not criticizing Windows Defender, so please don't flame me. ;-) It is a very capable product, but it is not Number 1 in credible AV ranking comparisons.

Security is all about layers, practicing safe "hex," and employing a robust backup strategy, the importance of which cannot be overstated!

No one or combination of security suites is 100% bulletproof. Having recent offline system images with bootable rescue media is very important, not just against malware infections but also to protect users against hardware failures or just plain stupidity. I think most of us would admit to having done silly things in the past; at least I have.😖

As has been often stated, the major security vulnerability is the interface between the chair and keyboard! 😎

I don’t use defender, but Microsoft scored the same as other products listed. Are we reading the same results? In the “Lower is better” scores, it competed relatively.

I think CDs were more in the 1990s with PC Magazine, PC World, PC Computing as Norton was already Symantec by the time there were CDs as before that were 3.5" Floppies... I liked Computer Shopper because it was big and had all those places to buy things. And then there were all those free AOL (America Online) coasters which was after 1991 as prior to that, it was known as PC Link, Amiga Link, Apple Link, Mac Link which were all under Quantum Computer Services and separate incompatible services for each hardware platform before they merged it all and called it AOL. I was a assistant host on PC-Link in 1988-1990. Some people used XTree, others used Norton Commander and people like myself used list.com/fv.com:
